Going to Paris at the end of feburary, I've got loads of sites to book a hotel but dont have a clue what area of the city is best to stay in, We're a young couple (late 20's). Looking for a hotel which will act as a good base for sightseeing close to metro station but must also be close(preferably walking distance) to resturants and pubs for night-time,

    Any advice hugely appreciated

    Hi OP,

I'm living in Paris myself for the year on student exchange.... loving every second of it :D I myself live in the 5th arrondissement (Latin Quarter). I reckon it'd be a great base for you to stay in. It's a fairly young and studenty/ touristy quartier, lots of reasonably priced restaurants and hotels. I'm personally living right next door to the Panthéon ( a big tourist attraction -actually saw Jacques Chirac there on Wednesday for a Holocaust memorial), and it's:

10 minutes walk away from Notre Dame

5 minutes walk to the banks of the Seine

40 minute (and beautiful walk along the Seine) to Champs Elysees/ Notre Dame / Place de la Concorde

Jardin de Luxembourg/ Sénat close by

20 minutes walk from Hôtel de Ville / Châtalet

    20 minutes walk to Louvre

More pubs, cafés and bars than you can shake a stick at within walking distance

5 minutes from Luxembourg RER station which links you with the 14 metro lines as well as the RER regional lines ( The RER C runs all along the banks of the Seine and is the handiest way to get to the Eiffel Tower). Also the metro is handy to get out to Sacre Cour / Moulin Rouge and Pigalle (red light distict, probably not your thing on this trip)

$$TRAVEL TIP$$ Also, if you fly into Charles de Gaulle Airport, you can hop on the RER B which serves Luxembourg railway stop and be in the centre of Paris in 25 mins, far better than Beauvais airport, which is incidentally 80km outside Paris and is served by a bus monopoly costing Eur26 return per person

here's a list of hotels nearby that I have handy u might want to google or ring them for prices:

As what skyhighflyer said, the Latin Quarter is an ideal area for couples. The only, small thing I'd say is that some of the places you can eat for cheap tend to be 100% for tourists and therefore you aren't really getting the best of what the city has to offer regarding food.

The Marais is another very cool area to stay in. Very little traffic on the streets, great places to eat/drink and again, ion the heart of PAris as is the Latin Quarter.

What €€€ are you thinking about for hotles?

I stayed on the Champs Elysee while I was there. Shashing location and ideal but it is a tad pricey.

We stayed at the Ibis hotel near Gare du Nord. You can get the train directly there from the airport. Also down the street from the metro! Decent priced hotel too!

The area is more ethnic so plenty of cheap places to eat and very cheap wine etc in the local shops to bring back to your hotel :D

We stayed in the Royal Magda Etoile hotel round the corner from the Arc de Triomphe a few weeks ago. It's pretty cheap by Paris standards yet is ranked 3rd (of 1300!) of Paris' hotels on Tripadvisor so they must be doing somehting right! There's a large metro/RER station at the Arc to whisk you to wherever you want to go in the city and alos dozens of restaurants and bars in the immediate vicinity. Highly recommended!

The only 'bad' thing I'd have to say about the Arc de Triomphe/Champs area is that it tends to be much more expensive to eat and drink (though there are bargins if you look on the side streets heading off the main avenue).

But what you need to remember is that the public transport is great with a metro every 2 minutes or so running until 1am (2am on weekends now) and a 3-day pass costing about €16 so no matter where you are, it's easy to move around the city.
