    County Meath.

The year would depend on whether it's AI as a prefix or suffix or combined with an additional letter.
Fo example AI 123, 123 AI, AAI 123.

I'm open to correction on this but if it's AI followed by a one to four digit number then it would have been the first series issued, begining in 1903.

Just for the record AI was first issued in Meath on the 12/03 and lasted until 12/51, followed then by ZN which lasted until 2/62, when AAI was then issued and ended with ZAI on the 6/75.

So would i be correct in saying AI = 1986 Meath ???

In December of 1986, xxx AI ended and then xxx ZN was introduced and only 78 vehicles were registered by the 31/12/86.

What is the reg of the car?

If it starts with 'AI' (e.g. AI 363) then it was registered between Dec 1903 to Nov 1951.
If it ends with 'AI' (e.g. 4589 AI) it was registered between Oct 1982 to Nov 1986.

    (I had an '84 Ford Orion (from 92-97) reg : 46XX AI).

I remember SI (Dublin) been used in the early to mid 80's when AI was the one in use in County Meath.

Yeah we had a Granada Ghia V6 new in 1986 with SI 6646, then SI gave way to ZG, then ZS, then 1987 came along !

Im looking at Irish Vintage Scene, February 07. On page I0 there is a picture of a Ford V8 so it applies to pre Nov 5I, then on Page 23 there is another AI reg but it has low digits so there was only 9600 cars registered in Meath in 50years????

There would have been 9999 vehicles registered in Meath using the 'AI xxxx' format before 'ZN x' to 'ZN xxxx' started in Dec 1951.

Just to throw a spanner in the works - my fathers old Fiat Mirafiori which IIRC was about 1980ish - it was 501AID (ID being Cavan)
