Anti-rust primers compared in Practical Classics

In the latest edition of Practical Classics they test 6 anti-rust primers. Hammerite, POR-15, Rust Encapsulator and a few others that I can't remember. The POR-15 came 2nd last and was rated worse than the Hammerite. This was a surprise as I have heard nothing but good reports about POR-15. Good results with POR-15 seem to be very dependent on surface prep though so maybe this was lacking in the Practical Classics test.

Anyway the article could be an interetsing read for anyone who needs to treat surface rust on their classic

I find Dinotrol the best tbh.

Is Dinitrol a paint? I thought it was a rustproofing oil/wax similar to Waxoyl but thinner and better I believe.

It might be a good idea to start a general thread on rust proofing products. The way I see it, there are a few main types
      1. Rust converter solutions. Often phosphoric acid based. Apply to rust and the rust is supposed to become inert. Examples: Krust, POR-15 Metal Ready
      2. Anti-rust primer paint. May contain zinc. Examples, POR-15, Hammerite
      3. Oil/wax solutions designed to repel water. Sprayed onto rusty areas or into cavities or after painting. Examples, Waxoyl (yellow tin), Dintrol
      4. Underbody sealant. I believe the idea with these is not to prevent/treat rust but to prevent paint from being damaged by stones and other debris. Examples: Waxoyl Underbody or Stone Chip sealant.
I would have thought that the best way to treat rusty metal using these producst is to first physically remove as much rust as possible eg by sanding. Then treat the area with product 1, paint it with product 2 and once the paint has dried properly, douse the area in product 3 and/or product 4.

Sometimes it wil not be possible to do all steps. If you're trying to protect the inside of a box section from rust obviously you cannot paint it. So you just use product 3.

      Any comments?

Yep, I plan on rustproofing my car. That sounds like a decent plan of action BrianD3. I've heard waxoyl is much cheaper on ebay, I've often been tempted to get it in Halfords :) Anyone got good sources for this stuff?

Are you planning on doing your Saab? If you plan to hang onto the car it would be a good idea to think about (preventative) rustproofing and treating any visible rust that's already occured.

From what I've read Dinitrol is better than Waxoyl. There are specialists out there who will thoroughly treat a car with Waxoyl or Dinitrol, seems to be a fair amount of messy work in it.

Yep, I recently had the engine bay stripped, sandblasted, primed and painted, but it badly needs rustproofing. Sample pic:

I also had the door bottoms repaired as they had rusted out, need to rustproof in there also. The wheel arches are still ok thankfully, but I need to get to all those also :)
