    Hi Guys.

I decided to make a poker table. But does anyone know where in Dublin i can get the foam for the main playing area and also the cushion around the side.

Has anyone made a poker table before?

zhivago.ie for the side cushion. They'll have to glue pieces together for you to make a large enough sheet.

Anywhere that sells hard wood floors for the playing surface foam. The stuff they lay under it is what I sued, 2 layers. Noyeks Newmanns is one place, although you have to get 25m there-about 30 euro. I'd say smaller shops will cut off 6 meters for you.

The foam for the rail, can you not just by a sheet and cut it up into piece and place them where you want ?

does it need to be 1 whole piece

Well you can do that, but its generally agreed that a single piece gives a better cusion as you wont feel the "pieces", and also the curve will be more uniform.
I'm starting one now, not doing a foam rail.

Just have a question, what would be a good size for a octagon table?
and does anybody know where to get table extras over here, like brass glass holders, chip racks etc

but if you buy 2 sheets and glue them your wasting alot of foam... i was going to buy 1 sheet and cut it out and then glue my pieces , also was going to curve the foam to make it look better.

Well it will be my 1st try at one, so lets see what hapens.

I don't advise cutting it up, it won't work well. If you do do that tho use at most 2 pieces that have no cuts around the curve - have them joined at the straight part.

Read some of the threads here. The Junell instructions are good. You don't need/want to 'curve' the foam. You basically should cut one large sheet in the shape of the rail leaving an inch or so at at the edge and then stretch the vinyl over it and it will look well.

other instructions here if you haven't seen them yet.

you are right NeVer, it is wasteful, and does cost more.
but people who have done it were not trying to save a few pennys, they wanted the best table they could make.
also what do you mean by curve the foam, the vinyl will give a curve to the foam as it is pulled around it.

I've decided im going for an octagon table. 1400 wide. So each side will be about 600mm. That should be enough per person. No foam, timber surround.
Still undecided if i want drink holders and chip racks

Yea Mellor I'm not going to cut the foam now. After reading all Junell's pages i'm going to make one like his. I'm not making drinks holders on my one.

If your looking for thin foam for under the playing area they have great stuff in B&Q (in tallaght) €15 for about 6 meters or something close to that. It's carpet underlay and would work great.

I have everything I need now except the felt.
I'm not really copying any design on the net, just taking ideas for each and adding my own style.
Now I just have to decide on a colour scheme for timber rail/racetrack/felt, then start it

Best of Luck. I wont be starting my table for a few weeks. I can only make my table at the weekends at the moment so it will take me a few weeks from the start.

Best thing is my Fiancé's dad owns a Kitchen building company so I'll be using his work shop. So i have all the tools i need and i can get the wood at a little cheaper then normal.

I hope it works out for me and you :)

    Hey,

I had some time in work today so i made this. from what i've been reading this should look right ?

Only problem i had was the racetrack and playing area... What are the sizes of them. i made the racetrack 7" and the playing area 26"

    Any tips?

Put something (I used bath room silicone sealant stuff) between the rail and the racetrack or the cards will slip under and you'll have to lift and shake the table to get them back.

I'd re-do my dimensions to suit the materials you are going to use. A sheet of plywood id 48" x 96". A rule of thumb I seen was that you need 2 foot per person. I'm making the sides of my octagon 2 foot.

I only need to get felt, is zhivago the best? What range of colours do they have??

I have cup holders, never going to use them. They're black plastic, got 8 shallow ones and 8 deep ones I think. You can have them free if you pick up from Ballsbridge or Stillorgan.

    edit: pun purposes.

I'd say an antique/curios shop would be your only chance of getting legs like that at a reasonable price. Know of one or 2 in the liberties area in town

Francis St is packed with antiques shops,
I have my legs sorted, dont think ill bother with cup holders, are they needed?

my tip would be have a curved edge at the end of the wooden part as when the cards go onto the wooden track they are often hard to pick up so make them easy to slide over/back.
