Linksys Wireless Router Kit €40

Tis a mighty price because it includes a wireless dongle for those who need it as well as the wireless router

there is a known DNS bug with the firmware unless you configure DNS statically but it seems it may be possible to flash the firmware with something like DD-WRT or Open WRT firmware instead , see here

    http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware#line-184

and this is the firmware which is supported but I have never used it myself

    http://wiki.openwrt.org/AR7Port

It could be inserted just behind a dsl router and used as a 4 port switch and combination wireless access point where the dns bug may not come into it.

If you think that DNS means Don't No Sorry then do not buy this please :D

Must check into that DNS issue as Im finding I am not getting such a good reception around the house as I do with my Wag-54gs, but this might be down to the Wag-354g not having external ariels:rolleyes:

Forgot to mention earlier but in PcWorld they had a sign with this saying for Eircom customers only but when I got it home and had a snoop around inside the browsers it had no settings pre installed at all. Where as I was expecting to have to go in and change a couple of things to get it to work with my EsatBt.

I got one of these today and I notice it does have a connector for an antenna on the top (under a plastic cover). I took one of the antennas off the 24.99 Eircom Netopia and it works a treat! Good signal all over the house. Seems a steal at 39.99, especially considering the pc card is also included. No problems with DHCP either.

Can this be used as a wireless bridge?

I want to connect my xbox/pc to one of the four ports on this router and then connect wirelessly to my exsisting network.

Can it be done with this?

    Hi El Diabo,

Yea the above LinkSys contains the ADSL modem, and as such can't be used with Non ADSL links, which is a pitty as €40 is a bargin!!!

For your NTL system, I'm presuming the cable modem has a Ethernet connection on it? If so you can pick up a Linksys WRG54, these accept an Ethernet connection from the modem, and provide 4 Ethernet ports + the wifi.

Sorry but could this be used with wireless broadband

If this linksys router can be configured (via its web page) to connect to the DSL port or ethernet port for the internet access, then this is a worthy buy. Are you sure?

I think he meant the router can be used as a wireless access point + 4 port switch, but it would not route anywhere, as it can only route via the DSL port.

So what you get (if you are not using the DSL part) is a 4 port switch + wireless access point, no internet routing. Is it still a bargain?

I don't think it would be possible to configure it to route via one of the ethernet ports or the wireless port insted of the DSL port, it's not what it was designed for. I might be wrong, but given the low cost, it's probably not that flexible. Maybe with some new firmware, but I've no idea where to get that, perhaps look at the link SpongeBob gave in his post.
