The bike got a bit of a hammering recently.
Someone decided to stab my seat approx 20 times the other day.

I was not going to claim anything, but I'm advised that vandalism does not effect your no claims bonus.
I'm with Aon..3rd party only ins.

Is it true? should I claim?

Well if it's TPO they won't give you a penny AFAIK

You have third party ONLY insurance......you get nothing out of it! It only covers somebody you run into/over!

Third party only insurance does seem kind of pointless to me for bikes as your highly unlikely to ever be in a position to make a claim on it, unless you happen to be in the habit of running over pedestrians.

Wouldn't be worth claiming for anyway, just takes a bit of vinyl and a few staples to fix it

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

That said, it's a scummy thing to happen, take care where and when you park, late at night in a city centre or anywhere else where drunks are about is dodgy. Even if it's just sitting on it 'for a laugh' it can fall over etc. Of course if confronted the stock reply is "relax it's only a bike" GRRR

It's not pointless. I have a TPO insurance for the simple reason that I must be insured to ride my bike and I can't afford anything else!

Does third party not cover theft?

    Third Party Only doesn't.

Third Party Fire and Theft does.

    Fully Comprehensive does.

That's why people on forums always write "TPO" or "TPF&T" :)

But is there a likely situation where you'd ever actually be able to make a claim on it? The only reason for you having TPO insurance for a bike is because of you legally needing insurance, not because you'll ever be able to make use of it.

third party insurance doesnt cover damage to your vehicle if you are at fault, it covers the damage u do to other persons or their vehicle
if u have it and arent at fault then u claim from the other persons insurance to cover the costs
if u dont have it u are fooked all ways
so it does have a point

Yes! Of course! If I run over somebody (God forbid) they will have medical fees and I will owe them lots of money which my insurance will pay, not me. Thus I'm basically making a claim to pay for the person I injured.

I realise that, but hitting pedestrians is about the only situation where a claim is going to be made against your TPO insurance. If a bike goes into the side of a car then paying out the cost of a bit of scratched paintwork on the car is going to be the least of your worries against the medical expenses that you'll have incurred for yourself. I guess I'm just thinking along the lines of the fact that any incident involving a bike, apart for bike/ pedestrian, the bike rider is going to come out of it far worse off than anything else involved that the TPO insurance might be paying out to.

just as concerning as pedestrians is cyclists.

how many people will claim of their own insurance for damage done to your own bike anyway unless MAJOR damage is done?

I see your point Robinph. Seen it this light, TP insurance is pretty useless indeed compared to fully comprehensive. I wish I could afford it! :o

Actually there'd be far more paid out to pillions (who are regarded as a third party) than there would be for pedestrians
