DEET in insect repellent

I'm in Australia at the moment & being eaten alive by every insect going. A friend told me to get an insect repellent with DEET in it and to get the highest DEET % I could. I got one with 80% DEET but it says on the tube that it can be very harmful if used for long periods of time. I've about 5 months left in Australia so I'm assuming that this would be considered a long period of time.

I also noticed that a lot of other insect repellents advertise the fact that they have no DEET in the way that food would advertise that it has no artificial colouring.

So does anyone know if there's something in DEET, or is there any side effects that I should be aware of?

    Thanks
