The next computer i'm going to get is going to be a Mac :)
So i googled around for sellers in Ireland and i came across Compu b

Has anyone here bought from them before? What are they like?
I'd probably go for the monthly payment option as they're quite expensive.

I reckon you should buy from apple.ie

I bought a 17" imac just before xmas, mine has a bit more power than your one above ( i tweaked mine) and yet i got it for more or less the same price as your one above.

I buy from Compu B all the time. Very happy with them. I deal with a guy called Kieran in there. Have bought all my macs there, going on 8 at this stage. I keep going back so thats a good sign I guess.

Id go for it. They are helpful, reliable and K knows his stuff. Not in the business of selling you stuff you dont need, just there to help you choose.

ok Rollo Tamasi, 440Hz makes some good points.

your computer is €1156 from compu b, the same computer from apple is €1019.

Now if there was a mac place near where i lived i would have bought from the mac shop and bearing in mind what 440Hz said i reckon you should buy from compu b. Its €137,ok, alot of money this time of year, i guess, but you cant beat meeting a person face to face. the man in the shop will help you now and in the future.

OP, that imac you just linked to is actually an old one; it's Intel Core Duo, the latest imacs have the Intel Core 2 Duo.

Anyway wouldn't recommend compub, they're expensive and outdated, just order from the Applestore as triple_h suggested, here's the link www.applestore.ie

I'd recommend getting the 2.0hz 17" imac. It's a little more expensive but worth it IMO. Are you a student/teacher, know anyone who is? Then you can get a student discount which is about 8% on hardware AFAIK.

Also if you aren't planning on ordering for a while then you should sign up for the applestore newsletter - they frequently have discount codes. Or hell, just ring in the order and act dumb, say your a new user, talk about dell being cheaper and they should give you a discount right there, maybe even a freebie.

My advice is, if there's a local Apple Authorised Reseller near you that you know and trust to support you, buy from them! For example, I have a great relationship with Galmac Computers in Galway.

Otherwise, buy from www.applestore.ie like Sad Professor suggested. Typically some of the best prices, and free UPS delivery on orders above €100. I can also vouch for Apple's own store: it's direct, fast, and very good service as well. And they've never managed to mess up an order, unlike Dell, where I have problems with orders every time, including missing items and overcharging!

Still order some things like displays and projectors from Dell though, as they tend to have good prices for those. Even though it's hassle every time. I never learn. :)

Urban Weigl ---I have heard of galmac before, it is the nearest mac store to me ( maybe) although thats 40 or 50 miles away from me. I know its on the headford road, but when you are driving its hard to be looking all the time while driving, can you, please tell me what it is near. For example is it near mc donalds or is it past dunes, cause i want to call into an apple store some day, buy stuff, look around and ask questions.

Dell---my god, what a bunch of cowboys. I will never forget when i bought my first computer, it was from dell and they never sent me the windows program, i rang dell. I ended up using a friends gateway windows, that was 8 years ago cause i never got it, even after ringing up.

thanks for the information guys, very helpful.
the thing i liked most about Compu B is the financing option they have on their site. I can get the above imac for 40euro a month over 3 years which is sweet as. Does applestore.ie offer the same service?

I'm no longer a student but finding one for a 8% discount is no problem. :)

They do in the states but not in Ireland I'm afraid. PC world probably offer a pay monthly option but I wouldn't recommend them either, lol. Best to just save up, it'll be worth it in the end :)

You can get it via their website, they rarely (maybe never) check that you actually are a student.

Galmac is past Dunnes Stores. They don't have a showroom, though. If you're looking for a showroom, take a look at the 3G store in Eye Square, they've even got the 17" MacBook Pro and 30" Apple Cinema on display last time I was there.

You can find all the contact details for Galmac at http://www.galmac.ie/

Just quickly, but have you tried to see whether a bank loan would work out cheaper than a store loan? Ya wanna save those pennies! ;)

Oh, and check out the Refurb Store from the Apple online shop -- around 15% off refurbished ex-demonstration/returned-and-repaired Macs. Do read the T&C though.

Been on the missing list there for a few days....

Sad_P, why do you say they are outdated? Apple stock is the same everywhere.

I keep going back to compub cos a) I get a student discount and b) they are good to me as a loyal customer. I realise that this wont apply to everyone, however for the bit extra you spend, if you are a new mac user, I would rec. buying from a person, having a face to contact and all that.

I buy from them, cos I have had great experience with them to date. Having sad that, buying from the Apple Store is the most logical/economical option.

For me I would say, if you want to be sure of after sales service, spend the extra and go to compuB, or galmac or wherever you decide. alternatively, if you feel you dont need that aftersales backup, then buy online.

Best of luck with it, and enjoy!!

    Katie

440Hz, maybe it's different in-store but all the imacs, macbooks and macbook pros they're currently selling online are the old models with the Intel Core Duo. The latest imacs and mbs have the Intel Core 2 Duo. Compub are selling them slightly cheaper but they're still outdated. They seem to be very slow getting the new machines in, especially since most of them have been available since october/november.

Maybe they just haven't updated their website but I remember years ago trying to buy a G3 imac from one of their former Dublin stores and having the same problem, they were still selling the previous models months after they'd been updated. I later bought the mac from typetec (who deal with businesses mostly) instead who I found much more helpful.

I think its just the site. My housemate bought a macbook from them at the weekend and its a new model intel.

This company seriously won my respect when I went to buy a machine from them on Finance. They advised that I'd be better off getting a bank loan rather than financing due to the interest rates! (22% for the finance, 10.9% on a bank loan). PC World wouldn't have said that!
