    Hi guys,
How much would a replacment key be from BMW does anyone know? (Have 1 key, want a spare) I'd need a remote central locking key, also guess i'd need to get it programmed

IIRC they are about €150. Programming is a piece of cake!
If the dealer is looking for money to do it then come back here and I'll show you how for nowt. Its all in your owners handbook anyway.

Thanks KB, but won't they need to programme a blank key for the immoboliser? Or can that be done manually?

So I just need to go into them with (presumably) the key number and they'll cut it?

I don't have the car in my posession atm, waiting on the seller in the UK to get back to me (See my other thread - E46 320d)

All of your keys need to be programmed together but its fairly easy to do.
To get a new key you may need to bring the car's ownership cert.

OK I think I get it. So what exactly would I need to order from BMW (The skanky whoors!) ... Just the key itself? No reprogramming mumbo jumbo?

I know with my current rover the key has to be reprogrammed, can't be done manually without specialist hardware

Once the dealer has the key for you then ask them if they will be good enough to reprogram it for you. If they say it'll cost you then come back here.

All you want/need is a key.

Cheers KB just wanted to know how much it would cost... Gotta add up all these little costs, y'know yerself ;)

I can't rightly remember the cost but IIRC its about that. Ring a dealer and price one!

    €150 just for the key?

    Dick Turpins.

I got a spare key cut a few years ago for mine in a local locksmiths. No immobiliser or anything. Just needed one to open/close the doors in the event the main key ever got locked in accidentally

Some manufacturers charge a good bit more for keys!

There is a good place in the bottom of Blackrock shopping centre (South Dublin) that I got VW (immobiliser) key off for €40 (programmed aswell, cloned from the original). Not sure if they would do newer BMW's etc.

From what I get from kbanon, this can be done for free DIY, what I need is the physical key

If you have difficulty getting a key, let me know. I'll still need your VLC, but I might be able to rush the process. As kbannon said, coding the new key to operate the central locking is a doddle, and it's already preprogrammed to deactivate the immobiliser, and alarm once it's in the ignition. BMW keep 10 main keys on file for every car, and 5 wallet keys. Exhaust this supply, and you need to buy a new control unit. € 150 sounds a little expensive, I think we're 130 ish, but I'd have to check to be certain.

Go into Collerans in town. They quoted me half the dealer price for a key/programming on the Audi.

The locksmith in Naas had a unit for programming keys also...he just couldn't do BMW ones. Killian, do you want to post up how the programming is done?

For my E39 its on pg 151 of the manual:
    1. get into the car and close the drivers door.
    2. insert the ignition key into the steering lock, turn it briefly (max 5 seconds) to position 1 and then back to position 0.
    3. Take out the ignition key and press button 1 on the remote control* and hold it down. Press button 2 three times in quick succession (within 10 seconds) while holding button 1 pressed in.
    4. Release button 1.
    5. The central locking system indicated that initialization has been performed successfully by closing and releasing the locks in quick succession.
    6. Repeat these steps for all other keys with 30 seconds of each other but do not alter the position of the ignition key while doing so.

    Thank's guys, great help.

Robbo - Was that for the whole key (including electronic bit ie. base of the key) or just got the cutting of the part that goes into the barrel?

I paid just under €150 for a programmed replacement key from Barrys a couple of years ago. Just gave them the chassis number and waited a week.

I was told it was €70 yesterday. Although I'm getting that with the car, so maybe that is what it costs them.

Sorry to be bringing this up again... Just to clarify....

I can buy one of these bad boys from eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Keyless-Entry-Remote-Key-Fob_W0QQitemZ220074239588QQihZ012QQcategoryZ33723QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

(I have the same style/design keyfob, presume it will suit)

Then, Robbo, I can go to Collerans (For those that don't know - Good locksmith) and they can cut the physical key?

Then, I can re-programme the electronic part myself without further expense?

Yes, I'm a retard, but better to be safe than sorry... Free pint to first person who can accurately answer, excludes Robbo as there's a chance i'll actually see him IRL :o

It's certainly a bad boy. It's a key from another BMW, and no, you won't be able to cut it, as it's already cut to shape another car's locks. This guy looks to be selling surplus keys, and while it will unlock the car remotely if you code it correctly yourself, it will never ever open the physical door lock, or turn in the ignition.

    Hi John,

Buying that key would be a waste of time. As Ned said, the remote part of it (or any key of that style) can be coded to work the locking but it will not work mechanically in the lock. Even if you manage to get a blade cut there is a chip in the key for the immob. I am pretty sure that nobody in this country can code these.

    John

I had to get a spare for my E39 and checked out all the options as the dealers were quoting around €140. Bad news is that there is no option here outside of the dealers if you want the key to be a fully working spare (i.e. immobiliser, ignition, etc)

BMW have the spares in Germany for all the cars they produced. You need to produce the paperwork and then the dealer will place the order for you.

Oh sorry I thought that you could open the electronic (black) part and remove the metal part that goes in the barrel? Obviously not. I was on about buying that eBay one just for the immob/RCL, and getting a fresh key cut somewhere.... Guess you can't do this then?
