    Hi people!

I'm having an issue with my G4 12" powerbook. I just upgraded the RAM from 512MB to 1GIG & for some pain in the arse unknown reason my computer doesn't recognise the new RAM chip. I've tried two seperate chips, restarted, reseated & done bloody everything I can think of & still no joy. Now I'm stuck with the onboard 256MB which is of course useless these days & a €150 piece of silicone.

Anybody have any ideas on what I can do?

    Thanks.

Where did you buy the RAM? Are you sure it's compatible? Have you made sure it was fully inserted?

does the original 256 not work any more (256 onboard + 256 sodimm)? if so its a logic board fault by the sound of it, maybe the slot was damaged removing the 256 sodimm, or just a plain old board failure.

the onboard 256mb works ok. like an idiot i sold the other 512mb of ram. i begining to think it's a hardwre fault with my mac. if so, does anybody know were i can get it looked at?

Mactivate in Blanchardstown or Typetec in Ballymount are the only 2 AASP's I know of in dublin.

Since you don't have known working RAM to test with, there is no way to tell. I'd say it could be a damaged RAM slot, or it could be bad RAM.

Best to bring it in and have someone take a look at it.

Sounds more like its a logic board fault.
Happened to my powerbook g4 15". I had a gig in it and never even realised that for about a whole year it wasn't recognising my other 512mb stick. Get mactivate to check it out for you. It will cost you 600eur for a new logic board not including labour from them. You're best bet in that case is to buy a 1gb ram stick instead and put it in your working slot. Its the lower one that usually doesn't work and you prob broke the ram trying to get it to work.

    Any update on this ?

When buying memory for any Mac it's always best to go to one of the memory configurator sites like those on Kingston or Crucials sites. komplett.ie have one also. Don't rely on the numbers, i.e. speed, etc. it's never that simple.
