Are there any of these ex Irish Army Mehari's which were fitted with a 24volt electrical system still around. They would have been sold at some of the last Army auctions in the early 1980's.

There was one for sale a few years ago in an Irish magazine, not sure which one. I think it was green in colour. Where was this one used? Its left hand drive so it must have been on UN duty?

    In 1977 the Defence Forces purchased 6 Mehari's - 992 JZC - 997 JZC and in 1979 they got delivery of another 6, 380 DZI - 385 DZI.
My photo shows 992 JZC which is presently being restored to its original army green and 997 JZC is in the Cavalry collection in the Curragh Camp. Nothing is known of the other 10, maybe by now all are scrapped, but who knows there maybe still some around in need of restoration.

Thanks for that, if it has either a JZC or DZI reg. there is a fair chance that it could be one of the ex Army ones.

Hi, just spotted this thread, I know a guy near cork city who owns an irish army mehari, 382 DZI which makes it a 1979 reg, He would be reluctant to part with it but I'm hoping to get it someday! its not in great shape but it is intact. I remember seeing one for sale in the buy and sell a couple of years ago, I think it was in kilkenny, I missed out on that one.

Everyone and his brother has one down where where I live. They drive them in the summer when the weather is really sunny and park them up in the winter when it drops below 25C.

I've been doing a bit of work on a 77 Mehari on Belguim plates for a friend of mine. Should be on the road this month. Only seen one 4x4. That was in Normandy and in a pretty sorry state.

I'm at the end of the Beara peninsula and do a bit of restoration work as a hobby. Got 10 classics and 3 bikes so enough to keep me busy for a while.:)
