Getting the odd paging error, for a few hours now and then, sometimes happens ever day sometimes not for a week, hard drive occasionally makes strange sound, as if spindle is doing something weird for a second...

Its a 6 month old Maxtor 300Gb SATA, cant seem to find diagnostics on maxtors site for SATA drives, they only hve ones for IDE, are there any generic diagnostics i could run on it?

Its an ASUS A8N32-SLI board, possible controller problem or defo the hdd?

PCs working fine, just worried drives about to die because of these errors.

    Details
    Product: Windows Operating System
    Event ID: 51
    Source: Disk
    Version: 5.2
    Symbolic Name: IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE
Message: An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation.

    Explanation
An input/output (I/O) request to a memory-mapped file failed and the operation was retried.

    User Action
If these events are logged regularly on a primary system drive, replace the device. Otherwise, no user action is required.

It is dieing, Ghost it to another drive asap. Do not run a defrag or anything. So this as soon as possible.

And also when replacing the drive... it would be better to get pretty much anything except a maxtor! The most useless and fault ridden hard drives i have ever come across!!

Feck. Okay this will be a weekend of backing up onto an external drive!

    Cheers :)

It's on the way out alright.

I've used Acronis True Image before to clone drives. It's very easy to use and IIRC you can get a Trial download which is fully functional for 30 days, which should suffice for you :)

Agreed. Every drive that has ever failed on me has been a Maxtor.

Have everything important backed up on external drive...weirdly XP has started to not boot and Vista on a different partition is working fine, faster then ever! Going to get a new internal drive this week and warranty this one.

Board supports SATA silicone image and raid so was thinking of running two SATA 300Gb drives mirrored...

Just going to hijack this thread for my own use. I was planning on buying one of these http://www.datakits.co.uk/store/altech-mediagate-mg35-500gb-high-definition-digital-media-driv-p-3096.html?osCsid=978ac52cd822756a77400921391d396d

The device itself has got great reviews but this one comes with a Maxtor HD.

Has anyone got any good feedback on Maxtor HD's or should I defo stay away?

    Thanks

Another big smash-it-with-a-hammer vote for Maxtor. Flatmate got one of their external HDs and, after a few days, it made a sizzling sound and in conjunction fried all the data in there. We lost it all.

    Thumbs down.

Always found Western Digital to be a good choice as an alternative.
