Question for BESS Students

I suppose students in any year of BESS could be able to help me out here, so any help is appreciated.

Im currently doing an Honours Degree in Business Studies in Waterford Institute of Technology. Im in my first year and doing quite well (exam results will tell though). Im looking to transfer to BESS at the end of the year. Theres a possibility that I may be eligible to transfer straight into 2nd year without having to repeat the first year. I can also apply to go straight into first year.

I got enough points in my Leaving Cert (475) however, I missed out on the random selection process. Id really prefer to go straight into second year, however, if the workload would prove too difficult, then it could be a problem.

What Im asking is, with reasonably good results in my course in Waterford (subjects including Management, Communications, I.T, Statistics, Accounting and Microeconomics), would I have covered enough to integrate into the course succesfully, or would I have missed out on too much TCD-only education? Any info, help or advice would be appreciated very much. Thanks folks.

I presume you're either interested in single honours Business or joint honours business and economics. You should be fairly ok for either of these I'd say. The only knowledge you really need from first year is maths/statistics. First year subjects can be really interesting, but as for needing them I'd say you're safe enough.

By the way, if your interest is in politics or sociology, then you'll be fine, their first year courses are very introductory.

    Hiya,
I'm currently doing third year economics and business.
What you should know is that BESS is not a business degree per se, but rather a collaboration of Business, Politics, Economics and Sociology and you can specialise in either a single or joint honours degree in third year.
In second year you do not have the option of specialising, but what courses you choose will determine what you are allowed specialise in (there is a link to the course handbook - maybe someone can post it for you as I don't know it)

If you want to do single honours business you will have to take at least one or two other courses as well e.g. economics or law. but as you have done business and economics modules I'm sure that you'll be grand.

Here's a link to the course outlines for this year. This is what the psychopath was talking about.

I presume you'll be wanting to do either pure business or business and economics.

Pure business in first year is quite philisophical - you learn things like the development of management and firm stuctures. Its fun and interesting and you do learn quite a bit, but its majoritively useless. Your business education will not have been at all hampered if you miss out on it. In fact, by having already started accounting and having learnt I.T., you've got a better grounding than most first year BESS students.

If you're also interested in Economics, first year mainly covers the basics. You say you've only done micro, so some of the macro stuff in second year will be new to you, but to be honest, I can't really remember learning any macro in first year, beyond Y=C+I+G+(X-Z), and possibly some stuff on money supply which I still don't understand. If you are interested in economics, the most important skills to have are mathematical.

I changed into Maths/Economics there, but I was thinkin of going into BESS. I talked to Prof. Drudy, whos the head of the course and he said I could probably transfer into 2nd year, no problems, even with just one subject(as long as I did good in exams), so I think you wont have any trouble catching up. Once youre in the door, they can be quite reasonable. So if you want to do it and you can get into 2nd yr I dont see anything stopping you.
