I am thinking of getting a degree and then applying for the Gardai.

Does anyone know what my chances of actually getting in would be?

What degrees would increase your chances of getting in?

I thought a degree just helped you in getting pay rises and specialist departments?

You have to go through the same training and signup process as everyone else regardless of what qualifications you have (at least in theory .. ) right?

From what i know you can sit the first promotional exam after the 2 year probationary period when you have a degree.

None, the application process is very defined.

However, it won't hurt your chances when going for promotion to Sergeant or Inspector, both of which involve taking exams in their own right. For promotion to Super you'd be expected to have an M.A. in Public Administration, usually from the IPA or an MBA.

why don't you try the reserve first and see if you like it ?
check out www.garda.ie for the requirements or
"Persons interested in a career in the Garda Síochána can attend the Open Days at the Garda College. These are next due to take place on 24th May 2007"

    also re :degree
Once you satisfy the basic entry requirements you are entitled to apply and sit the aptitude test. If successful you will find that your degree may assist you as you develop your career. Information Technology Section, Bureau of Fraud Investigation, Criminal Assets Bureau, Internal Audit Section and the Research Unit are examples of sections where a relevant degree would be an advantage. Management related degrees would also be of benefit to those who seek to develop and progress their career to management positions.

Personally I would advise get a degree and a bit of life experience and if you are still interested then try it out. Remember in this day an age of a booming economy/good jobs market it can be a tough way to earn money.Having said that i know plenty of people who joined straight out of school I still considered a "late joiner" having entered templemore when I was 23 .....
