Just to let you know that the Athlone Casino was robbed the other night and all the punters had their wallets taken as well. Didn't make the news but hopefully it will be an isolated incident and won't become one of the downsides of pokers increase in popularity.

Thats sick. Imagine being on a great run, up a nice sum and then some scumbag takes the lot. I was thinking lately alright, how a casino (or punters outside on the way home) would be an easy touch. Luckily I never have much on my way home :)

    brave robbers!

would like to see them pull something on a few of the fitz/jackpot regulars...

Yikes. That's scary s**t for anyone playing around the midlands. Hopefully it'll prompt the various owners to improve security asap, because the few places I know are severely lacking.

I've played in that casino a couple of times.

It did occur to me at the time that it was a soft target. On thinking about it now, it was an inevitability. The entrance is unmanned at the back of an office building in a dimly lit carpark down a quiet lane on a quiet square. I pushed it to the back of my mind at the time though. IMO they're having a few teething problems and I'll avoid the place while they are - I'm not begrudging them luck in getting it up and running well though - they just seem to have bitten off a little more than they can chew comfortably at the moment.

Im surprised it took this long tbh, robbery waiting to happen around the country for years now. Lack of security is a joke, sooner regulations come in the better.

I was in there last sunday, wonder if it happened later that night. Although as everyone else said i am not surprised at the least, security is non-existant in that place!

Im from Athlone and ive heard nothing on this at all which is unusual because stories like this usually spread fairly quick.

Anyway was just wondering why people taught a place like this was an easy target just because they dont have much security. Id imagine a garage, rural post office, late night chipper etc would be an easier target than busting into a room full of poker players (some more than likely with a nice few pints on them giving the opening hours of the Athlone club.) than trying to take money off a garage attendant whos unlikely to put up a struggle. Also im assuming their going to be armed, security are not going to be and so i cant see extra security making a whole lot of difference, id also assume they'd be wearing masks so security camera's wouldnt be much use either.

I would say that people leaving the place in the early hours of the morning alone or in small groups would be an easy target giving the poor lighting, time of night and because the area is also a bit isoloated from the main town centre. Would be easy to have someone in the room ring hes mate and say that some fellow who just won a couple of grand is about to leave.

Saying that ive never been to a casino so i wouldnt be an expert but personally if i was an armed robber id choose late night chippers, garages, rural post offices and leave robbing pubs and poker rooms full of drunken men to someone else:D

Hmmm... Small room with one entrance to it -10 to 20 men all carrying between €100 and €1000 on average at the end of an alley in a dimly lit carpark with no security cameras, nobody watching the door and nobody taking responsibility for watching the place. If I was that way inclined, I'd pick this over the local post office any day!

Good to hear that mate -

Please note people this Club is not part of Our company so please stop pms and phone calls to see if we were robbed , Cant understand how this thread would start with no facts .Think it should be deleted as The Owner has clearly stated nothing happened and it could be damaging to his buisness and have implications Legally
