More macbook random shutdowns!

Some of you will remember I was one of the people with the random shutdown problems on my macbook (bought in July 06).

Apple replaced the logic board on it but it was still shutting down of its own accord. After a *lot* of trouble, they agreed to replace it (around September, iirc).

Macbook has been running fine, until yesterday when it randomly shutdown while plugged into AC, not running anything intensive on it, just iTunes and Camino iirc.

    Happened again this morning.

    :worried:

Makes me worried about my decision to get a Macbook Pro in May....

I'd call Apple and get it sorted. Laptops from any manufactures are going to have issues. I' had a Toshiba once that gave me nothing but trouble. Lapotops generated a lot of heat in a small space. That why it's a good idea to buy the Apple care on a Laptop and flog it just before the 3 year warranty expires.

See I shouldn't have to buy applecare and nor will I ever buy it. A few days after they sent me a replacement, some woman rang me and very agressively tried to push Applecare on me, saying "You'll never get another replacement you know! You've been very lucky!" I said er no, the laptop YOU sold me was NOT fit to be sold.

I've had Apple hardware for many many years and never had any problems with them, so i'm not going to buy an extended warranty because they've produced some sh*tty hardware!

It's the logic board, actually. Which I had replaced. Which was also a dud. Which is why Apple sent me a replacement Macbook. Read the original post.

I too had RSS problems with my macbook purchased in July 2006. I too had to get a new replacement. I was unwilling to accept a repair due to the many documented cases of repaired units experiencing the same problem.

When did you receive your replacement machine? Apple did not really get to the root of the problem (they were denying the existence of the issue for months) until September and any new custom machine (i.e. one that would be built for your order in the Far East) should be free of RSS issues.

If you received your replacement prior to September/October it is not very surprising that you are once again experiencing the same issue.

I would insist on another replacement. Offering to replace the logic board on a less than 6 month luxury item would be a bit like the garage from whom you purchase a brand new Merc only offering to replace the engine after repeated instances of major product failure.

If they refuse get tough and don't hesitate on taking an action in the small claims court. I used to work for Apple and know all the little dirty tricks and lies they use (the call centre agent will refer to it as "policy and procedure" to avoid honouring the legal rights of their customers:D

    Good luck

I bought a Macbook when it was released last May, I must be really lucky as I haven't had any of these shutdowns (well I had one). I upgraded to OS X 10.4.8 last week and there were two patches in there that were supposed to stop this happening, so maybe you need to check the software updates link?

One of my colleagues bought a Macbook a couple of months ago and this is indeed shutting down without warning.

eth0, have you installed the latest firmware? I remember you saying you hadn't installed it or something.

Like womoma said, you can download it from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate11.html

To my knowledge, the random shut down issue has never affected the MacBook Pro. Some early MacBook Pro's did need to get a battery replacement, though, due to "performance issues". I think you can check your battery serial number online, and Apple will send out a new one via UPS if yours is affected.

Well. It's more than just random shutdowns now.

The battery isn't recognised, even though pressing the button on the bottom shows it is fully charged. I've done NVRAM/PRAM/PMU resets, reseated the battery and it still doesn't recognise it.

Also, CoreDuoTemp shows it has only having a 1gHz processor, instead of the 2gHz that's installed.

I just rang apple support..."Oh it sounds like the logic board has a problem, what you'll need to do is bring it to your nearest Apple authorised repair centre".

I'm just aghast that Apple would sell these sh*tty machines. 1500 euro and i've had a replacement and the replacement has only worked properly for 3 months!

I wonder what the chances are of getting a refund out of Apple? I'm prepared to go to the small claims court at this stage. This is ridiculous.

Oops! How embarrassing! Turns out that CoreDuoTemp will only show 1GHz available if there is no battery inserted or the battery isn't being recognised!

So it looks like it's just a faulty battery and they're sending me a replacement one today. Fingers crossed that's all it is but i'll keep y'all updated.

It's understandable that I thought the worse given the atrocious problems I had with my original macbook!

Also it probably underclocks itself when its not being utilised, like other mobile processors which often hit as low as 500mhz when idle.
