Does anyone else think Nintendo needs a smack?

This is just something I have started to wonder since the Wii's launch....
Everyone on every forum I'm on, is asking, demanding, and waiting for a media channel for the Wii.Do Nintendo actually pay any attention to the little thing called "market research"?

They could do it easily if they wanted to, and it's not too much to ask.
It's one of those small things they can do that would make the console better and our lives easier.Rather than messing around in the bloody photo channel to get music and videos to work.

The Wii has so much potential it just needs to be used.
I know the console isn't long launched, but there is no indication of any plans either.True the News, weather, and internet channels are great.
But come on a media channel would have been so much more simple

And the talks of the "Wii Lite"....what type of crap is that?
Why wait a year or more to re-release a console with just the added feature of DVD playback? If that was a deciding factor of people getting the Wii, then why would people have bought this version? It's just one of those things Nintendo keep doing to try and make extra money.

I think the DS Lite is equally bollox but that's another story.
I bought the DS "Phat" and I didn't and won't get the Lite, and the same goes for my Wii.

Ok I'll stop ranting now, but does anyone agree about a media channel?

TBH I couldn't give less of a **** about a media channel. I bought my Wii to play games, the extras such as the weather channel are good but a media channel just won't be used by me same as the media features on my xbox 360 and the dvd playing capabilties of my PS2 and xbox, I've never used them.I have a PC for such things which is far more versatile. I think forcing Blu-ray on people and thus raising the price of the PS3 is more of a crime. When I do get a PS3 it will be for games, not another useless format that a standalone player could do for cheaper and better.

AS for the DS lite and the rumoured Wii lite, you don't have to buy them and anyway they are just prettier versions of the console with no new features (or maybe useless DVD playing capabilities which my toaster will probably have next year). I've a DS fat and don't see the point in getting a DS lite, although it is very pretty :) . It's just a way for Nintendo to reinvigorate the market for the console in the same way sony did with slimline PS2. It's also working wonders for them.

Now a turbografx duo, Neogeo or sega saturn channel would really be something.

    .

A standalone Blu-Ray Player is upwards of €1000 atm . They will fall in price, but so will the ps3.

Can you not just use that free orb setup to stream from your pc?

I hadn't even thought about it. And now that I have, I still don't want it.

Yeah, everyone everywhere wants this media channel.

If by everyone everywhere you mean yourself.

Nintendo aren't at our beck and call, we can't just complain about not having something and expect them to conjure it up out of thin air. They are providing us with a service, and I'm sure as much as they like consumer input, that input isn't going to dictate the direction they take.

If you want a media channel then set yourself up here :

    http://www.orb.com/en/get_your_digital_media_on_your_tv_with_orb_and_nintendo_wii

I've it running and it's pretty handy for parties etc but not used really that much 'cause peeps want to play Wii, not just watch vids and listen to music on it.

To be honest, i've no interest in a media channel. I can see why people want it, but anytime my Wii is on, it's for playing games.

And as for giving Nintendo a smack? If Nintendo was a person, I'd walk straight up to him, and shake him by the hand. SFII and Probotector in one day. Perfect.

I would like a media channel, maybe play divXs or a way to stream stuff full screen though the webbrowser.

But i would rather nintendo focus on the Games/Online and geting 3rd party stuff to the Wii, than get sidetracked.

All that stuff will come in time, the Wii is too sweet a package for it not too. They just need to get one in every household, something i could see them doing.

It is cheap and friendly and looks a little like an ipod.

I would agree with the OP to a certain extent. Whilst I bought my Wii primarily for game play, I expect the modern console to do much more. The Internet Channel and Forecast are fanstastic and I'm using them every day (anyone know when the News Channel will be launched?).

A Wii Media Channel would be a huge bonus for me also. I was researching the streaming capabilities of the Wii before I bought the console and would consider such a Channel a massive step forward. I have collected a fairly large amount of video content over the past few years and really hate watching on PC monitor, so up to now my solution has been buring to DVD-R's and watching on my DivX capable player, but this is a pain.

Whilst ORB is a step in the right direction, it is very limited on streaming video to the Wii having to transcode to the Flash Video format which can then only be watched via the Opera browser. The video quality is bollo* and one has to put up wih the annoying Opera browser bar at bottom of screen.

Yes, a Wii Media Channel should be released by Nintendo.

    Forget I said anything...
I can safely bet that if it was released with a media channel it would be praised in all it's glory.I wasn't taking a shot at Nitendo, I own all their consoles.
Whether or not any of you have seen people wondering why there isn't a media channel, it's still happening.

I was only pointing out that since it wouldn't be too hard for them to provide us with it, why don't they? It's an extra thing they can say the Wii does.
My points fell on deaf ears so there isn't really much else I can say.

I don't really care if there's no media channel...I bought the Wii to play games and have a little fun. I'm not even bothered about the news/weather/internet channels either. For me, it's about playing fun games and thats what Nintendo has always provided above any other consoles.

Don't see the need for a built in DVD player either though it could have easily been done. If you don't already have a DVD player (which you probably do) they are very cheap to buy these days...

So, no major complaints for the Wii from me!

And this is the first time I've heard a complaint about the need for a media channel..

I admit it would be very handy if they sorted this out, possibly adding more formats and the likes all into one channel
course I dont have broadband so i couldn't get it but like RetroGamer said I bought it for gaming nothing else

I really dont see what a media channel would bring to the party.

The Wii doesnt have enough internal storage to store a respectable amount of Media, and SD cards arent big enough to make it worthwhile either.

This means Media would have to be streamed to the Wii either from a PC or over the internet. Anything streamed from the Internet would likely be of ****e quality, and the Orb solution works adequately if you have a PC connected locally, and will probably get better.

I really dont see what the problem is here. Its a Games console. The whole design philosophy was to produce something that was about GAMES, not the Media Hub approach that Sony and MS are persueing.

Well like it or not, Micro$oft and Sony are who Nintendo are competing with here!I'm all about gaming the extras never really was a deciding factor to me buying a console. But they are still cool to have.

And I know the internal memory of the Wii is only 512MB they could come up with drivers to allow USB mass storage to be used with the Wii.

And my points, were only points.
I'm not giving out about it, I like the rest of you have other things that I can use that do all these things better but it still would be a good feature.

Get an xbox and dvd remote and put xbmc on it youll have a life changing experience for less than a tonne.

And personally not bothered by the lack of a media channel cause if it ended up anything like the psp or 360 with their restricted format choices i wouldn't use it anyway. What im more interested in seeing is an email channel and for them to remove the oversized menu from the bottom of opera, oh and wii sports 2 online.

In fairness, there is nothing to playing Bowling, as long as you raise the Wiimote high enough before letting go, the ball goes down have the lane in mid air before landing and going dead straight, no matter what way you are holding or tilting the Wiimote.I found this with most of the games other than the initial swing or whatever there is nothing great about the motion sensing in Wii sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

yeah, but how often do you get strikes with throwing the ball straight? if you want consistent stikes you need to master spin.

Well the initial swing is what counts! After the initial swing the ball is free from the characters hand and rolling, therefore you have no control over it.

Do the bowling training, it is a very good tutorial in spin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

By bowling straight I get strikes 8/10 times, I don't bowl dead centre I move a click or two to the right and then bowl, always seems to guarantee a strike.
And when I mean the initial strike is all that's user determined, I didn't elaborate properly, I mean like say in tennis you hit the ball a certain way and the ball will go one way, you hit it the same way the second time and it will go cock eyed!

I just don't think the motion sensing in Wii sports is that good to be honest.
At first I was amazed, but the more you play it you start to notice holes in the game play.

Wii tennis is just about timing. You hit the ball in a direction depending on when you hit it. No matter how much power or effort you put in it won't make any difference. I find the trick to bowling is just to keep your hand dead straight as you throw it. Baseball shows what the Wiimote can do best.
