DVD Drive woes - any suggestions?

I bought a NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Black OEM just over a year ago and it has been getting into the habit of seeing some DVD's and not seeing others - the f**king "No Disk in Drive D" alert box. It tends to prefer DVD's in better condition but sometimes it will not see a brand new disk.

From my experience with my previous DVD drive this will probably get worse. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is it simple fatigue.

If the best thing is to get another drive can anyone recommend a good, durable, reasonably mainstream CD-RW, DVD±RW burner?

I am wary of getting another NEC - any suggestions? I have seen a few at Komplett.ie - are there any recommended good Irish sites like this?

You could try upgrading to the latest firmware to see if that helps or not. I always thought NEC were fairly reliable.

I've found that my NEC drive is picky with dirty/scratched discs. The drive was cheap and I knew what I was getting when I paid €30 or so for it. There are unofficial firmware updates for the NEC that do all kinds of weird and wonderful things - one of them may solve your problem.

Plextor do quality drives but they'll cost a bit more than the NEC. I'd recommend these if you decide to replace your NEC.

NEC are usually pretty good it could be the media you are burning with are of such poor quality that when the drive burns them it simply cannot read them back.

Download VSO Inspector and go to the media tab then and the media ID who is it ?

Also update the firmware of the drive, the latest firmware can be found on this page download the "MadDog ND3550 OEM firmware 1.F3" firmware and flash in Windows with Binflash Win32 GUI.

Bad media is bad media of course and firmware can only do so much if that is the problem at hand.

    Thanks

I haven't done much burning to be honest. The problem usually occurs when putting on DVD movies.

I will have a look into the firmware updates.
