Yesterday I had about 30 shortcut icons on my screen.
Today I now have 6
Blank spaces where they used to be.
No idea whats happened, could have been kids but not sure.
The programmes are no longer in the shortcut programmes either.
What's happened and how can I get them all back?
Can't remember what some of them were.

XP has a built in desktop cleaner..think it runs every 40 days or so and will automatically delete unused icons if it's told to. It needs user intervention so it's possible one of the kids might have done so..it's no biggie..just go to your start menu and right click on each of the programs you want and select "create desktop shortcut"

The Desktop Cleaner will move all the shortcuts to a new folder on the desktop called something along the lines of "Unused Shortcuts". However, if they're not under the Programs menu (I presume you meant the one in the Start Menu?) then its not the cleaner as it doesn't touch that.

Probably not that as I used some of the icons that disappeared
    within the last week.

That's it, some of them aren't there but some of them are but none have the shortcuts.

You could always try and roll back the OS with system restore.

Would that restore the icons that have disappeared?
