hello is there anybody who has a clue about registering for a VAT number?
Now, I'm a bloody foreigner and I'm thinking of working as freelance translator here in Ireland, and I've been told I absolutely need a VAT number or I'll never start working *properly*.
Naturally I haven't a clue, I don't know if that's true (well I know it is true for my country), although that's a more specific problem, my question is how the hell do I apply for a VAT number? :D
Do you have to pay to register for it?
Does it work in the EU? I mean if I get a job from germany, can I use my VAT number? If I'm sick of it can I resign it?
Ok, that's it. Thank you everyone.

Do you have a PPS No.?

Are you working in Ireland at the moment?

You regsiter as a self-employed individual with your local tax office by completing a TR1. This form has different sections of regsitration, Income Tax, Vat, Paye, and RCT.

You must register for Income Tax - this means that you will be responsible for making your own income tax return every 31st of October.

You "may" regsiter for Vat if you wish. However if you think that your Sales/Income/Revenue will exceed €55000 (this figure has increased) in any one year, then you "must" regsiter for vat, and charge vat at 21% to your clients.

Vat returns are made very 3 months here.

    www.revenue.ie

On the left you will see "for Businesses", click on this. Click on "Starting a Business" and read "Regsitering for Tax", Income Tax and Vat and your Business.

Any questions, please do not hestiate to ask.

    Kluivert,

Would the services threshold me more applicable for a translator?

'The VAT registration thresholds for businesses are being increased from €27,500 to €35,000 in the case of services, and from €55,000 to €70,000 in the case of goods. These increases will take effect from 1 March 2007.'

    Poly

I'm guessing you'll be working for the government or government agencies - so you'll also need to get a tax clearance cert - and for this you'll need to register as per Kluivert's message above.

    Thank you guys, really helpful.
I have a pps n and i've been working here for a while now, anyway about the translator situation I'd better write to an association I'm sure they'll be able to tell me something, and as well I'll call in the revenue and have a look, ask some questions.
    Thanx for helping!
