Ok I know i'm prob gonna get slated for this one....but one of my girlfriend's friends is thinking about joining the gardai. I had a look at the salarys and they go from 25,000 to 45,000 euro per annum not includng overtime. What i want to know is on adverage how much money do they take home everyweek (net). I mean 45,000 euro per is 865 per week minus say 200 taxes is about 650 euro. I make that now and I'm 19 years old. It doesn't sound like much money at all...

15 x 40 = 600euro , and then you need to take tax off that.

€45,000 doesn't sound like a lot of money to you?

For arguments sake at 45k you would have a single persons tax credit of about 4,500 (incl. of various bits and pieces) giving you a taxable income of 40,500
Of this you will pay about 6,600 @ 20% 3,075 @ 42% and 3,825 @ PRSI (you will also have other deductions) leaving you with a net income of about 31,500. Divided by 52 this gives you about 605 per week- which is not bad for an after tax income.

I am very curious as to how you claim to be making this at age 19 (legally that is......). I'm 32, I have 2 graduate degrees and a postgrad qualification- I do not make that much (net).......

Would you care to enlighten us.

    hi here's the real story.

You may start at 25k but the increments increase over a seventeen year period. In other words you are on maximum pay at seventeen years service. If she has a degree prior to joining she may receive extra increments after joining. normally a third level degree would give you a two year rise in pay.
