Saw these knocked down to €1299 in Dunnes Jetland Limerick yesterday - nice plasma also has a digital terrestrial receiver built in there were two left - very tempted to buy one but got a 37" lcd 3 months ago (for 1499!) and the missus is still giving me grief over that one!

I got one of these a few weeks back - last one in stock (display) for €1249. Including vouchers I had, worked out at €1049. As far as I'm concerned, that price for a 42" plasma is unbeatable.
The picture isn't fantastic, but I think that's to do with NTL's crappy signal rather than the TV - the bigger the screen, the more you notice the flaws in the signal. The Xbox looks amaxing through it. I'd say if you had access to a HD source it'd be rocking.
I can pick up RTE's DDT trials through the digital receiver (picture's better than NTL digital), and it's got a cam slot too, although nobody seems to know (or wants to tell me!) if I can actually use this for picking up "extra" channels, and I don't know enough about that kind of thing to figure it out myself.
I'd say if you have the opportunity to pick one up, do!

You can save the other €700-€800 for glasses then, oh I miss the flicker of a cheap CRT tv

saying to forget about lcds and plasmas is stupid, what does it add to the thread, yeah they mightn't be right for everyone, but someone looking for a big widescreen for a home cinema type setup would be stupid not to look at plasmas or lcds

hd tvs can handle sd content, a standard crt cant handle hd

crt's tv are limited to 30 and a bit inches, lcds/plasmas are not

crt's are heavy and need much more room behind, lcd plasmas don't, you pick your screen size that fit's the space you have

widescreen crt's much more likely to suffer distortion with picture

black level and refresh rate of lcds/plasmas can be an issue, but in most cases if the tv is setup right, they can offer a picture perfectly capable of matching a crt in most peoples eyes

some people don't have good video sources and sticking to a small crt will let them enjoy the content without noticeing it lacks detail, fine

some cheap hd lcd/plasmas can do a crap job of upscaling sd content, cheap crt can suffer all sorts of issues too

i don't have a big screen lcd/plasma and don't need one, i do have a projector though and know what the big screen adds, i still go to the cinema for new releases but prefer the experience of watching a film at home

If somebody want's a new tv or better tv, looking at lcd/plasma makes perfect sense. A crt might meet some peoples needs but in most cases I would think a lcd/plasma offers a better tv experiance. crts are great value and the picture is "fine" but lcd/plasma can offer much more

lcd/plasmas are more expensive because they are better in a number of areas and that is what you are paying for

with regards to this offer i don't know the tv and can't say if it's good are bad, might be what some people are looking for

I've no problem with people saying it's a crap tv, but you said "forget about all these lcds and plasmas, for most people picture is bad" not really the same thing

    methinks you protest too much
did you pay too much for a tele with a poor picture aswell ?

I don't want to be pedantic, green123, but I did make the point that this was due to NTL's crappy digital signal, not the TV itself. As I said, the xbox looks great. DVDs too.

Anyway, the Bargain Alerts forum doesn't seem to be the place for a debate on CRTs vs. LCDs/Plasmas. But whatever.

OP- will you let us know how you get on when you have your 42" HD ready CRT mounted on your livingroom wall. Diagrams and/or photos would be great.

yes ryaller but the point is that most people have ntl or sky digital
so they will have the same poor picture

Has anyone got any experience of this TV? The Phillips I've been looking at all had some of the best quality pictures of the LCD/Plasma kind I've seen first hand. Reviews say that the picture is exceptional at the price and the downsides are audio (doesn't really count if you put it thru a your home ent system) and crappy remote response.

Shouldnt be the case ive a different 42" Phillips and the picture quality is excellent from ntl standard and digital box. The one my friend has looks really bad when compared so i dont think the size is much of an issue.
