Anybody know what the story is with the Garda emergency response unit? How many counties have them and what type of firearms do they use?

They are everywhere, although primarily based in the cities.

Weapons include various rifles, shotguns, pistols & revolvers and they have moved to the MP-7 SMG. I suspect they get whatever they want.

Don't know, however, they should have units ready to deploy in counties where there is most firearms offences prevalent in my opinion. Intelligence led policing is the way forward.

I appreciate what you are saying, however, in a situation that may develop say in Cork, there is a minimum three hour car journey down for the E.R.U. (unless there is a helicoptor deployment). The local detectives would have been on scene and dealing in the meantime. Why have a nationwide E.R.U. based in Dublin if this is the case?

The last I heard was they are primarily based in Harcourt Square,Dublin but can be deployed anywhere in the country at a moments notice. I have seen some of them going through the selection process in the college. It is punishing beyond belief. Not only do they have to be extremely fit but they also pretty much lead 2 different lives - their personal lives and the lives they lead at work. Both would never combine at all and they must keep secrets, even from other members of the Gardai

Pretty much every county in ireland has armed detectives including Cork so they can handle the situations as you said.

I think each county has an ERU anyway at least the big ones like Dublin,Cork, Limerick and Galway. I'm not too sure tough anybody want to add to this.

As i said the unit is based in Harcourt Square, in Dublin City , this is where a lot of the Garda national units are based , I'm only a sandbagger in the overall scheme of things so I cannot influence this policy situation.I agree with the poster who mentioned time delay etc
No other county has an ERU unit permanently deployed in it, they do however have a very fluid type operation and would be in the field, anywhere in the country for days /weeks at a time.
Btowner feel free to PM me with any other questions you have about An Garda Siochana as you seem to have a keen interest.

As far as operations go the ERU do a whole variety of things from raids to warrent services to hostage situations. They also as you know carry out a crime suppression role very effectively in the country's major flashpoints. It's great seeing them out manning roadblocks. It makes you feel that little bit safer.Truthfully thay are involved anonomously in most of their operations. We either hear about the operations on the news but with the ERU involvement kept from the media or we don't hear about the missions at all.The only time we hear about the ERU is when the media wants blood over something like the post office incident(in Lusk?),ie anytime they can't deny involvement. This probably doesn't tell you anything you don't know but sure i thought i'd throw in my penny's worth...i wouldn't mind being on the ERU somday!

there is a unit in EVERY county, it consists of a small local unit from the local detective branch who are the first to respond, the main unit is based in Dublin and is called out in serious instances, the local eru team hold the fort until the Dublin unti arrive by road or helicopter

The ERU consists of 49 people.40 det gardai(they may not all be det gardai but will be if they stick it out),8 sergeants and one DI.Thats not enough to spread over the country.Perhaps you're thinkin of the local armed detectives who would of course respond first to the scene and await the ERU if required, but there is certainly only one specialised unit(itself divided into 4 working units).the operation is based in Harcourt Square. They are of course to be found in Limerick or other flashpoints but that is only a tour of duty for the units assigned there for the few days or whatever. They are based in Dublin but are a national unit. There isn't one in every county:)

there is a local eru team, the local detectives make it up, they call themselves the local eru team, they are the first to respond and are equiped with sub machine guns and the detetctives own personal issue handgun, the team is NOT fulltime and are only put together when needed(ie,hostage situations before the main ERU arrive), the only fulltime specialist team is the one based in Dublin

Well a lot of detectives have access to machine guns.It just depends on what they're doing.Of course there are people who respond to the incidents first to keep things ticking over until the eru arrives but if they call themselves the local eru team then that is just their own nickname for themselves, its not official.the only eru is in dublin.I know what kinda team you mean but local eru is just a fanciful nickname!the only squad in ireland that has eru in the name in the fulltime specialist group in dublin

practically every station , or at least every district would have a local DDU, that is district detective unit, these people would have access to firearms and indeed would carry pistols on a daily basis as part of their tours, when a serious incident occurs , they would no doubt be on the scene dealing with what ever is going on and assessing the need for more back like the ERU or SDU (special detective unit), depending on the make up of the district they may have access to more powerful guns like UZI sub machine guns, it would be easy to get confused and think they may be a local ERU, but the ERU is a national unit , they receive very specialised training in all kinds of scenarios that the DDU units do not receive, while these detectives may well call themselves the "local eru" it may be an inhouse joke or something along those lines.
