it's a few months now since the todayfm reshuffle. Ray in the afternoon, and Phil at weekends, I think that Ray from 12-2.30 was a mistake. Phil should of been left where he was, he was interesting unlike Foley who basically took his night time show to the day. What do people think, did they make the right move or should it have been left as was?

I think they should have left Phil Cawley in the afternoon slot and pushed Tony Fenton to the weekend. Ray Foley's show is growing on me.

yeh Tony at weekend, would of been a good move...

It'd mean finding a few CDs for the weekend, but yeah.....having Phil back on weekdays lately made me REALLY nostalgic; I'd switched to Clare FM in the interim, but heard Phil say last weekend that he'd ironically be back on weekday afternoons for the week.

Ray Foley's show is pretty good, but on occasion he makes it a little too like Ray D'Arcy's - not enough contrast between them when they (Ray, JP and the girl that's with them) start talking and joking (shades of Ray, Mairead and Will there) and then ringing people about questions and topics, etc.

But DEFINITELY - BRING BACK PHIL!!!!!! Maybe we should all email Today FM and start a petition ? Sorry Andrew! ;)

Daytime's not looking too bad, Ray Foley is much better during the day than at night, although his departure's left a gaping hole before midnight. Give Phil 10pm - 12 and you're onto a winner. Not sure if PC would want that time though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭magnumlady

I agree that Ray Foley is very much like Ray D'arcy, they should have Mr Foley on in Tony Fentons slot and someone else (Phil) in the middle, I really don't like Tony Fenton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,971 ✭✭✭patrickc

Phil back in for Foley this week and he's better than Foley any day. IMO

yes, I'm sick of him too. getting sick of D'arcy too. his program needs a shake-up and he's sometimes he makes me cringe with his comments.

    never like that Foley bloke....

a year ago I'd have the dial permanently on today fm, now i switch between Ian and 2fm for the breakfast show, generally miss Tony because of work so nothing lost there, Foley thinks he's the bees knees; he's not though at all. D'arcy I can still manage.. Ian definitely needs to do a shake up of his show, it's too predictable

TOTALLY agree. He is such a smashey and nicey type of DJ. The guy must be 90 and he acts like a hip down with the youth type of guy. TWAT! My all time favourite quote from the balding ball bag came one day when the DJ on before him cut over to his studio to ask him a question... Tony had a big guffah laugh and told us all that he was (and i quote) "chowing down on a sambo" and could not talk while laughing manically! What the f*ck???? This made my toes curl in an all consuming blood boiling rage and the radio was turned over immediately. I spent the next 20 minutes swearing while picturing how i would kill him with slowly with honey a swarm of killer bees.....

Who the f*ck talks like that apart from balding-90 year old-mid life crisis suffering-motor bike riding-leather biker jacket wearing-sad-pathetic-skirt chasing-old DJ's called tony?? Answer: NOBODY!

Ian Dempsey is getting a bit tired. He loves the sound of his own voice and but for Gift Grub i think he would have been in serious trouble a long time ago. Shut the f*ck up Ian and play more music.

Ray D'arcy is without doubt the best in the business right now in his time slot. Gerry Ryan is a Howard Stern wannabe with his "shock" jock reputation. Housewives are the only ones fathead Ryan shocks these days....

Ray Foley is positively a vocal God pouring forth audible honey compared to the muppet he replaced. Really enjoy his show.

If Ian could be shocked electrically whenever he talks to much and Fenton just killed then it would be pretty much perfect for me.

they should have given ray foley more time during the night and got rid of matt cooper because there is just to many phone in shows there isnt need for one on today fm.if you want phone ins retune to newstalk or radio one

matt is the best in in his slot, thats why he's the most popular also

I agree with Patrick......why are you suggesting removing the best show from the airwaves ? I don't listen to NewsTalk - I did for the first 2 weeks and found it irrelevant - and I don't listen to Radio 1.

If you want to remove talk shows from the airwaves, I'd suggest looking to see which one is least popular/relevant and remove that.

I quite like AMK in the mornings, get to hear the last 20 minutes or half an hour of it before work... Not a big fan of Dempsey but he's grand for the breakfast.. I used to love D'Arcy but he has gotten a bit stale - still listen as much as i can though... Wasn't happy when they moved Ray Foley - I used to listen in the evenings but don't get to hear him that much - he's class... Phil Cawley & Tony Fenton are both rubbish in my opinion, although the alternatives (Tim Kelly etc.) are ten times worse... Matt Cooper is v.good, def. better than radio 1 & newstalk... Don't listen much after that, so can't really comment on Tom Dunne etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Phil Cawley made me cringe. His show smelt like gone off radio cheese. Let him fester in his weekend slot, where he belongs, so I don't have to be subjected to the nauseating tosspot during work.

Ian Dempsey's show is the most listenable of the 'zany' morning shows out there. The other guys (I'm looking at you Strawberries) sound like they've topped up on Tramil and expressos before going on air.

Ray Foley's show is good, but other posters here are correct; it's a carbon copy of his evening show. Matt Cooper's show is clever and informative, although he can be a little sarcastic/patronising at times (a classic case of the jaded journalist I think).

As for D'Arcy, name one radio presenter in the business who does it better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭opa01_2000

I like Matt Cooper - I think he's the best around at what he does.

I can handle Darcy - he's good if not a bit bland.

Don't get me started on Ray Foley - he reminds me of Dick & Dom on the BBC. So unfunny that when they had the show audited by a professional he told them that the only two people who thought they were funny was themselves. Despite this they carried on. Unfortunately Foley is of the same ilk - he cannot understand how unfunny he is. I must admit I have to find another station when I find myself in the car at lunchtime. Come on Today FM - surely you can do better than this to$$er ???

Agreed. I'm a big fan of Today FM. I think they've got the formula just right. I wouldn't be into the day-time "jock" stuff but a station needs to make money so it has to be there. However, I can't understand why Ray Foley is on in the afternoon. The night-time slot was perfect for him - don't 15-year-olds listen to the radio then? They did in the early/mid-nineties anyway when I was a teenager. His show is surely going to appeal to that demographic moreso than those who listen to the radio in the afternoon - apart from dossing students. But most of his fans would surely be at school or college - am I wrong? And Philip Cawley/Tim Kelly seem to me to be as "afternoon" as you can get. The night-time slot does not suit Tim Kelly one bit. Not just because of his age - it's style rather than age (Ray Darcy's in his early 40s and Ian Dempsey's well into his 40s). Can't see how he'd be a draw at that time of night.
got rid of matt cooper because there is just to many phone in shows there isnt need for one on today fm.if you want phone ins retune to newstalk or radio one

The Last Word is hardly a "phone-in" show. That's the term you'd use to describe Joe Duffy's show.
Matt Cooper is superb at what he does and The Last Word is an excellent programme. And it's one of the station's biggest draws, so I doubt they'll be "getting rid" of it - lots of advertising means a successful station.
It's what I think is great about Today FM - the fact that it can do the serious current affairs show, the business show, The Sunday Supplement, yet it also has the likes of Ray Foley for the kids, a more intelligent than usual breakfast show, a mid-morning show that's light-hearted but not idiotic and covers some interesting topics, a really good early show with great music and presenting (AM Kelly) and quality music shows from Tom Dunne, Alison Curtis and Donal Dineen.
I think they can be forgiven for the afternoon jock stuff - again, they need to be able to pay their staff.

I've gone right off D'arcy, he's become very arrogant and opinionated and how does he get away with the amount of bad language he uses? He told Tommy Tiernan to F**k off during the school holidays and last week they repeatedly had the encarta man say b*****s. Jenny does my head in because she's even more arrogant than D'arcy

I'm really surprised at the amount of swearing that goes on by DJ's. D'arcy is shocking for it, but so is Ray Foley and on 2fm G. Ryan and Colm and JimJim.

A couple of weeks ago, Darcy was discussing the immaculate conception with a colleague, he was asking a lot of simple dumb questions as regards it while his colleague answered him best he could. Eventually he commented " So was there sexual penetration" and went to a break. I dont know if this was supposed to be controversial or funny but this would have insulted a lot people. Wonder would he be as brave to insult the islam faith? His show is just one big love in and pretty much is cringe inducing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Hrududu

It probably didnt offend many since that is not what the Immaculate Conception is. Its not about Jesus's conception but Mary's.

the tide seems to be turning against D'arcy and his show here recently. I'm also of the same opinion. I think the show is tired and the format needs a shake-up. and I agree that Tom Dunne was a nice change during the week.

God I haven't laughed as much in ages. 5am suits me perfect. I'm still in bed and there's no chance I can hear her. She is not national radio peak time material but in her defence she's not alone.
I think Yesterday fm are slipping a bit. Even the weekend schedule is a bit all over the place. Iano is sounding very same owl same owl. It won't be long before Foley and JP are moved to breakfast. Iano would be a perfect lunchtime host.
As for the weekends, I think a bit of stability is required. 2fm have it wrapped up music and presenterwise.

Out with Cawley,Fenton,Kelly(both of them) and in with fresh blood. Lets do a list up of local talent who are good enough for our national airwaves.

Oh and Derek Flood is defo the MVP of Today FM

Yeah I was surprised at how well Tom did this week. I remember he covered for Ray Foley or Tony Fenton or someone in the afternoon one week a while ago and he was god-awful.

I'm getting a bit bored of Ray D'Arcy too - I started listening to Today FM regularly since last summer but he's got very samey.

Tom Dunne has the best music show on Irish radio.

Ann Marie Kelly is also excellant.

Matt Cooper is consistantly very good.

Today Fm has a very strong bunch of presenters.
