A friend of mine is interviewing for a managerial position in Dunnes.

Anyone have any experience working off the shop floor? Are the company reasonable?

I served a six month sentence in dunnes about four and a half years ago when I was 16. It wasn't a great place to work, the only thing that kept me there (apart from money) was that I was working with lads my own age and we had a laugh.

But the manangers treated us like slaves, we were working more or less flat out for our whole shift, the managers would go mad if we stopped to talk to someone. (we had to ask to go to the toilet, if we were missing from the shop floor for more than a few minutes the managers would go mad, our breaks were timed to the minute, the list goes on....). I remember on the day of my induction they told us "half of you won't be here in two weeks", that kind of sums up what they were like to work for.

I wouldnt go back there for a career. From a managers perspective they expect you to put in huge and unsocialable hours, deal with a lot of crap from the staff / customers and I got the impression that unless you are the grocery / drapery department manager you arent that well paid (my friends dad is a store manager in a different shop to the one that I worked in). As I said that was in 2001, so maybe things have improved since then.

I worked there as a trainee manager in the last year, defo don't do it unless your as hard as nails. You need to be willing for those senior to you to treat you very badly and you have to hound and treat those below like a piece of dirt. To do well you must constantly be on your guard and hang everyone at every chance. There are easier ways to earn a living, you will work for that 26k salary, i mean work.

Nightpack managers are defo worth a look tho, very easy job if your willing to work into the morning say 10pm to 7am(should be gone by 4-5am, 5am on the busy nights ie the following days trade is expected to be good(later in the week). If going for nights the try 2 get a store where they pack at night but are not open 24hrs.(wiil get 36k starting on nights)
If your a right **** in your personal life i'd say go for it as with that attitude you will do well. If your top class the you could make ass manager in 9 months(rare tho).

What age are you and what is your background?

    Best of luck

I worked for Dunnes for 5 years and they were the best times of my life looking back at them now.

I started as staff and worked my way to trainee mgt. I was transferred 5 times in 3 years so i got to see a few places and make many friends.

The job is tough there is no getting away from that and as a trainee usually you will get the crappy hours and jobs but as you work your way up it gets better. All store managers are not the same but overall dunnes do expect that while your there you work and that does work its way down to staff on the floor and you do sometimes have to be horrible. dont forget if the jobs not done then your in trouble so be it on your head

The money wasnt great but after a few years learning your trade with dunnes and working your way to at least assistant level, dunnes managers are seen as the best on the retail market as their work ethic is hard and fast and take no bull from anyone so expect to be able to apply for positions with other retailers for much better money and benifits.

It was like college to me stayed there for 5 years now im at the top(not with dunnes tho), its tough but worth it

Blimey! Thanks for all the responses.

The friend who's applying is only 21, but has lots of experience working in retail and grocery, at managerial level and on the shop floor.

*And* she has a work ethic *and* she's gullible.

    Should fit in fine. ;)

    Best,

    Joe.
