What is it with this place?

A man has a bit of cash to spend and wants to try out a few twangers but all that the shops around here have hanging on their walls is the same ol same old.

I fargin hate strats. dont particularly like Les Pauls. Like Tele's but...

Where are all the Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Mustangs, Duo Jets, Rickenbackers etc. Dont even think about trying to find something even slightly exotic.

In Dublin you can either buy a strat or a fence paling and not much in between.

    sucks man. sucks hard.

Meh, you'll learn to not need to. I haven't bought a guitar in this country in 6 or 7 years now. I hadn't tried one in a shop here in even longer until me and Fey tried out some SX basses in the mighty Waltons :D

Just read up on what you're interested in, check out as many pics as you can and, with some patience, you can buy something in and, if it isn't for you, sell on without incurring any real loss of money. The shops here aren't interested in stocking things they can't be sure will sell. I recall when I phoned Musician about high end 5 and 6 string Ibanez basses and was told I'd have to commit to buy one for them to get one in for me to try out. Wonderful logic, you must admit. So I bought one alright, just not from them ;)

In fairness, they probably thought you'd just get them to bring them in, try them out, and then get one somewhere cheaper on the internet anyway. And they would have been right. ;)

Musician has the best selection of all the shops, they tend to stock some less common guitars. I notices a Mustang in there yesterday, go check it out!

True. ive seen a ricky in there before which i did try out but it was gone a few weeks later so i couldnt have another go.

they charge way over the odds there but theyre pretty decent fellas i guess.

I'm really interested in trying out some of the smaller Gretsch's. But im not prepared to buy one from japan for 2 grand on the chance that i might be able to sell it if i dont like it.

Ireland is crap for trying to sell things for a decent price.

Ive bought a fair bit of stuff over the net but i still prefer to be able to walk into a shop and walk out with what i want. guess those days are pretty much gone though.

I didn't even ask them to get one in, I just asked "how much...?"

So, yes, when they quoted a figure just under double what I knew it would cost for me to import it myself, it was clear to me also that it would be bought over the internet, but I still consider their attitude pretty poor (and that goes for most of the Irish shops) - ie - if you want something other than the norm, go elsewhere. For me, the likes of Bacchus, Lakland and Edwards are putting out great instruments which I wouldn't have the chance to play in this country. I appreciate the shops here have to deal with popular demand (there will always be more of the market looking for the big two G + F) but they just don't cater for folks who want a real choice, which is in turn turning people onto internet shopping, which is in turn alerting people to the rip-off prices, which is in turn harming their business as more and more money goes abroad.

Sorry, I couldn't read any more of your post after that bit ;)

I think the only reason most non-chain music shops are still open is because they made so much money before t'internet. They wont be around an awful lot longer.

Is that really true, Dr J? Any examples, please? The reason I ask is that I've got the GAS, bad, very bad. But I'd have to get rid of one in order to justify buying a new one.

You only need to look at the prices that things like LP standards go for in the buyandsell. Im pretty sure you could import one from the states, play it six months, and sell it on at a loss of just a couple of hundred quid.

If youre buying something that is popular and has good resale value you cant really go wrong.

I wouldn't even worry about that to be honest. I'd say I could make a massive profit on my Les Paul if I went to sell it.

A mate of mine bought two Les Paul Standards at a total cost of €1300 each for Chris a couple of years back. When was the last time you saw a Les Paul Standard sell for less than €1300 in this country? The only problem is, in this country anyway, most folks aren't into anything different or exciting. If you are going to sell, it needs to be pretty mundane, ie Les Paul, Strat or Telecaster. For everything else you need a bit of luck to find the right buyer. With most instruments you should be near enough to breaknig even provided you've a bit of patience and ignore the lowballers who crowd around most sites like this.

Cheers! It seems like ages since I bought a geetar!! I'm having a lot of fevered guitar imaginings at the moment. :(

Yeah, and if the guitar's even a wee bit special, as mine is, for if/whenever I decide to sell, you'll make a mint. Even stuff like limitedd edition colours or whatever jacks up the price no end.

hah another one? what have you got in mind man?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

I can't make my mind up. I just know I want a new one  . I'm thinking of an Eric Johnson signature Strat or maybe an SG or similar with p90s. Or maybe .... anything. :D
I'm glued to Ebay every night. I've got to get that GAS monkey off my back :D
And, I'm serious, if I do get a new one, one of the existing harem has to go.
