Argument with neighbour

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I couldnt find any other suitable so anyway: A new young family moved in next door to us last year. For the last 6 months they have been running some sort of generator 24/7. I dont know what it is because I would actually have to go into their back garden to see it, but theres a huge tube, chimney like thing coming from it that terminates at their roof. It runs for about 5 mins, stops for 10 mins then starts again.

Anyway the problem is at night its so noisy it actually stops some of us from sleeping. We have gone in and asked him to turn it off but he denies its even them which is complete bs. Because we know the next house up and its not them either. And the noise is so obviously coming from his back garden.

Just wondering is there some sort of noise pollution laws or something I can take him to court to get it shut down because I have already asked nicely and they are being assholes about it now (not answering the door when they are in etc)

    Thanks for any advice.

Damn right there are laws, the dept of enviroment is the best place to call first thing tomorrow. No one understands the hassle noisy neighbours give. Once, after weeks of being woke up at all hours and nothing being done by the cops etc, I resorted to a cobblestone through a skylight, it worked too. Sometimes the only way to deal with bullies is to become one, just for one night. Nice guys get excuses, nasty ones results.

    Hope it works out.

Fantastic, thanks for advocating destruction of private property on this website. Don't do it again thanks, this forum does not condone such acts. Please read the charter sticky at the top of the forum.

the cops CAN'T do anything. they have no legal powers to do anything and they don't go to the calls because the noisey neighbour can tell them to piss off and close the door and theres nothing that can be done.

As stated, get in touch with the local county concil authorities. Its a court order you'll be looking for.

Definitely Do Not take the law into your own hands.
Then you will be the bad guy! The Gards will then come after you!
Definitely Do Contact your County Council. Noise Pollution section.
This is a civil matter in which the Gards are almost powerless.
The Environmental officers do take this seriously and they will investigate.
Hopefully you won't have to go to court over this.
Let us know how this works out for you.

    Good Luck.

    Check this out, http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/environment/environmental-protection/noise_regulations/?searchterm=noise%20pollution

Not sure if you want to go this route, but it's better than doing anything yourself.

OP is this a noise that's only started since they moved in? Its sounds like a combi boiler which does come on and go off all night and day, but should not make such a noise that it wakes everyone up.

It sounds like an external oil boiler, but i can't imagine any domestic one that would be loud enough to wake you up. I wonder is it a temporary diesel fan heater, but I couldn't imagine it running 24/7.

    Sleep deprivation is the worst!!

We had a neighbor whose alarm was going off every weekend for a month ... They were away or whatever but refused to get it fixed. I eventually went across the road with bloodshot eyes after 4 weeks of it and ripped the thing off the wall. The Guy called the gardai and they said "Well .. he wasn't in his right mind was he, maybe you should have gotten it fixed"

This was after repeatedly calling the Gardai every weekend for a month.

It was nuts .. it would go off for 5 minutes .. have 2 minutes of silence and then go off again, the silence was worse because you'd be praying it would stay off ..

I never felt so much job and satisfaction when it stopped. Needless to say the guy got it fixed and didnt ask me to pay for it.

The next door neighbor said he was so happy when it stopped.... turned out he was on the verge of throwing a brick through the guys window after similar requests.

Sounds like an air conditioning/heater with a temperature control.
The tube that terminates at the roof is probably the air duct for the heated/cooled air.

Any sign of a newly installed vent of some sort on the back wall? Window upstairs covered 24/7? Maybe attic window with narrow crack of light escaping 24/7? If so bring over an empty plastic bag and ask if he wouldnt mind...

It sounds like you're living next door to Dr Greenthumb.

Tell him, you know what the noise is and to sort it out before you have the council investigate, give him a time frame.

Also be careful, you have no idea if it's just him or if there is someone behind him.

Blacked out windows would be a dead giveaway.

<edit> I see he's not answering, drop a note in the door addressed to "dr greenthumb" and lay it out there. If he's too paranoid to even open the door now, that'll really put the wind up him.
