Which one is it? years about 1990-1996

I had Honda Civic hatch 1993 with 1.3 engine and the thing cost me 1400 anual, cause it qualified as "sports car" lol, the car itself cost 1100

The only ones that I've heard that are relatively cheap are Toyota Starlet/Corolla.

You could of course buy my 999cc 1997 polo I'm selling next month :D . @ 21 with 1 years NCB, full license Quinn quoted me €998 3 weeks ago. In all seriousness, any small 1.0L hatch I would imagine. Its basically worked out on how likely it is you are going to saddle them with a huge TP claim. Hence why larger/faster/powerful vechicles are more expensive.

Make sure its less than 10 years old whatever it is, most insurers will load your premium if the car is older than 10.

A friend of mine is paying 700e a year on a 1997 999cc polo, hes 20, 1 years NCB, full license. Think thats the lowest insurance I've heard of for a young male.

Generally small cars such as Polos, Micras, Fiestas and Starlets are cheap to insure but alot of the time it is not the car that insurance companies load but rather the person who is insuring it. If you fall into the high risk insurance category of young male with little or no NCB then even a Micra or Starlet will be expensive to insure.

The Seat Ibiza is a nice cheap car to insure and it has way more respect than a Micra.

I also did up a premium(I work for an insurance company) for a Toyota Prius and I was for half nothing, the customer has a 1.4 astra and the new Prius, same engine, was 160quid cheaper than that versus the Astra.

A car 1200cc or less that is not older than 10 years(10% loading) old always come in quite cheap.

If you are on a full licence but not a full no claims binus always mention your named years. If you on a provisional licence most companies will not recognise yer named years. AFAIK, Tesco will accept each named year on another policy if you are on a provisional licence. (10% introductory no claims bonus for each year.

And don't let the fact that it's Tesco put you off, Hibernian are doing all the underwriting for them and it's a hibernian policy.

The smallest engine and the least risk. Thats what you are looking for. Lots of 1.0 cars around, which is the lest risk though? I would have thought something like a Yaris or Micra would be the cheapest to insure.

    Miike.

Really, it basically goes like this.

The lower the engine size, the cheaper the insurance.
The more common/known-to-be-reliable the car, the cheaper the insurance
eg Toyota Yaris/Nissan Micra, can't go too far wrong there
If you're a female it's cheaper... you know that much.

But when it comes down to it, you're not looking at THAT big a difference from your 1400...

I don't think insurance companies take that much notice of reliabily when it comes to grading car insurance. Not many people claim off their insurance when their car breaks down.

Also smaller engines may not automatically mean cheaper insurance either. It mostly depends on what risk catagory the driver falls into. A 40 year old female with a full licence and 5 years NCB will probably have a lower premium on a 1.0 Micra than say an 18 year male with 0 years NCB and a provisional licence on the same car.

Shopping around different insurance companies is the key to lower insurance regardless of car type, I mean if you're considering various cars with small engines it won't really matter as much as the insurer you choose, that may depend on your age re options, think classic / vintage if your age permits and try countryside insurance brokers and companies who may offer better deal. Then go for a weny wee car and after you fill out the paperwork for insurance you can beef it up a little like this one:

The reason Civics are so expensive to insure is because a monkey could steal one in a crowded car park it's the one most likely to be nicked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Also they are mostly likely to be driven by numb skulls.

ever consider a car-van? they are by far the cheapest thing to insure,
peugeot 306 carvan, or a ford fiesta carvan were at the time the cheapest two things to insure. im sure there are more car vans as cheap, corolla van wasnt, golf van wasnt.

    Quinn quoted me €900 on a 1.3 Mini @ 22 and 1 years NCB.
So I did a quote on a BMW e30 318is, chancing my arm and it came back at €1120. Yoink.

I don't have a NCB, and I've only been a named driver for 3-4 month so maybe that's what is affecting the price, of course besides the car being old.

stevenk, nope never thought about that.

hmm Seat or Polos(C.D., are you liking the Polo?) sound interesting and aren't embaressing to drive around in, or the Rover John mentioned(sorry can't buy it right now John).

Anyways, thanks for all your inputs guys! greatly appreciated!
