Petrol additives for classics?

    I've been looking at buying a classic car for a while now but one thing I never considered was the effect of unleaded petrol. I was looking at a car in California where the owner mentioned he can't get leaded petrol anymore so he brought the timing back and uses an additive. Does anyone have experience of this?

    I don't know of anywhere that sells Lead Replacement Petrol anymore - would it be okay to drive a classic around with standard unleaded once the timing is retarded, or would it be better to put in an octane booster or something to up the temperature?

    Ok,

    The purpose of lead in the fuel was to stop pre-ignition, however one of the side effects was that it protected the valve seats, this is where the main problem lies.

    First what car/age/engine size is it?

    For me, I'm close on 5 liters, so I have a big lazy engine that won't need lrp, but I throw in a squirrt of a lead replacment/octane booster every second tank, never had any problems when I didn't. I've also started using a higher octane fuel. In general you'll be fine and won't need to do anything.
