Pausing what you're watching is possible on some machines, but recording one and watching another Sky channel is not possible, except with Sky+ (which of course has no DVD recorder)

Buy a panasonic dvd recorder or any hdd recorder that has the feature called "timeslip". Timeslip recorders let you can watch and record at the same time. Buy a quad lnb and a cheap digital reciever. Run a second lead to second reciever. Connect a digibox and second reciever to both your tv and recorder. There should be enough inputs/outputs available unless your tv is very old. Using a bit of forward planning regarding programming schedules You can watch one channel and record another at the same time. It,s as near as I can get to skyplus anyway, it works very well for me.

Or DIY: build a Mythtv box yourself and put as many decoder cards in as you like to record more than one thing at once. Although be warned, this isn't that easy to setup and I guess is aimed at the geek type (like me) who fancied a challenge!

I was in the same predicament last year, wanted Sky+ but not the fees! So I bought a DVD recorder, and no, I cant record one channel and watch another. But I find I rarely want to do that.

What is good is if you are recording say a match, just start looking at it on playback and you can pause it to make tea, answer the door, rewind to see an incident etc etc

Also another good feature which almost makes up for not being able to record one channel and watch another, is that you can while recording, view a previously recorded programme.

Where I find this handy is if I come in in the middle of a recording, or just dont want to look at it at that time (I may have earlier episodes still to be viewed for example) I can look at one of my earlier recordings, thus freeing up some disk space and not wasting viewing time!

Finally, I have a simple 20" set in the dining room with the 4 irish channels, so if there really is a clash of programmes that I MUST see, one of them is usually on one of the home channels so I just look at it in the dining room and drink tea....!

Its a little compromise but it saves €180 a year!

The Dreambox 7025 comes with two tuners so you can watch one channel and record another, however these boxes are not cheap and are aimed mostly at the sat enthusiast/computer types.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/
