If its a thread I'm interested in then I'll usually follow it from the start and if I miss bits I'll read the relevant stuff to catch up.
Some threads theres no point though, such as the "what age are you" kind of threads where you can just not bother reading the rest and answer it yourself.

Oh and theres some posters I just habitually ignore and never bother reading their posts, so that makes catching up on threads a whole lot easier.

The only threads where I wouldn't read the whole thing would be those with more than six or seven pages, or very old threads that have been bumped. People not reading threads can be annoying because it digs up topics that have already been debated and get pissed off when you don't want to debate it all over again.

If it's a thread I'm really interested in I will probably read all the pages, but then again I read alot more than I post on boards. If it's longer then 6 or 7 pages though I usually just read the first few and the last few posts.

Sometimes I look at the topic, read the first page, think "how in the name of jesus have they managed to get 7 pages out of this", then go to the second last page and read up from there.

Don't have much of a choice but to read through all of the pages on forums I mod if someone reported something. I love the "ok I haven't read the thread but..." comments after 6-7 pages. :) I wouldn't blame anyone for not reading that much.

If we keep going, we may get to a point where this thread may be ignored!:)

If a thread is over a few pages long (and I view 40 posts per page), and I haven't been following it then I'm not going to read through it all. It'll either have gone off topic, have become a flame war, or be mainly made up of people repeating what's already been said. So I might read the first few and last few to get a taste of it.

I have 40 posts displaying on each page, so if it's particularly interesting I might read 3-4 pages. Then again, sometimes you see a post on the first page you want to reply directly to.

I try to have read everything before posting, but I generally steer clear of big threads.

Are there posters where you would avoid their threads full stop?

Fair enough, but if they're going to contribute, it's good manners to read / skim the thread, or to at least keep their comment BRIEF. People who write looooong essays which repeat earlier posts (especially when it's fairly factual stuff as opposed to explaining a point of view which is slightly different, or which they see as different anyway) can be really annoying.

Yes, people who don't use paragraphs *grinds teeth* or as randylonghorn pointed out, people bring up the same point in essay style posted pages back up again.:)

I don't read long threads, even if they have interesting titles. I may read the first post and then wander away to blander, less complicated threads.

    that sums it up nicely.

I didn't even read most of the replies before this very one. I think thats a decisive conclusion.

I have to read every single inane post. The immigration and knacker threads are the worst, the same bull**** points being made over and over for 10-20 pages. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,324 ✭✭✭Alter-Ego

I stay clear of long threads. Most are filler but some do hold my attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,257 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

It all depends on the forum. If there is a thread more than 3-4 pages in AH, then I definitly won't read it all. I can only handle so much pain.

On the other hand, a long thread in FB, Humanties, Religion can be an interesting read. In the case of FB, it is often funny.

Some users I just blank over when flicking through threads.

i always skim through threads read a couple of sentences of each post and if it's interesting read on otherwise will skip to the next post ,

usually find though that when someone quotes a big long post in reply to a small post i end up reading the ones i skipped anyway , theres very few long threads that haven't managed to have gone around in circular arguments for about 10 pages

No reason to check the first page folks... move along

Totally depends. Usually for threads like these, I'll read the first three posts then skip to page 2 and read a few there at the end and work backwards untill I'm bored or thought of something to contribute.

If the first post in the thread is good, I'll read the whole thread.

*ignorantly repeats what has been stated on the first page a dozen or so times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

If i have a point or view i need to argue ill read the whole post and quote and reply to anything i thought was relevant

Depends on the topic of the thread and the quality of comments.

i read the first two options of this poll and got bored.

    does that answer your question??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

i'm sad enough that on the forums i frequent, its rare for a thread to get to more that 2 pages before i get a chance to read it, especially now my exams are on :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,417 ✭✭✭Miguel_Sanchez

Personally I know nothing about book binding.

this thread has 2 pages, i didnt bother reading the first one...whats it about?

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,864 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

40 posts per page ftw. As said, depends what the topic is. Mostly AH threads are just full of inane white noise such as this post by me.
