Do you take range balls

The question I have to ask is "Do you take range balls"

I have seen people doing this and I personally don't see a problem with it. I think it is a good idea to throw a couple of them down and hit a few practice shots on the course.

They cost next to nothing for the owners of driving ranges and the break up really easily. I don't think the owner will mind if I swob a few of them

If they were anything but total crap I'd think about it. I use high end balls for play and any balls I find around the course I might use for extra shots like an extra drive etc.

It is also stealing so I don't think it would be worth being arrested for the sake of a few poxy balls.

Thing is they aren't like your normal golf ball, they are heavier and won't fly as far, so if you want to practice on course they won't give you a 100% accurate representation of your shot, so for that reaon it's a bit of a waste of time, you'd be better buying a dozen cheap distance balls or mid range spin and distance off ebay(Little bit of spin plus distance eg NXTs)

plus the Funker is right, it is technically stealing, but i doubt anyone has every been arrested over a few range balls. :)

Sounds like a trap to me - TELL HIM NOTHIN' LADS!! :):p

Never bother myself but wouldn't lose too much sleep over it if I did... Although I played K Club before xmas and all the range balls were pretty decent Srixons. Was tempted to pocket a couple, but didn't...

No for the reasons JR Hartley pointed out.
However I would retrieve any range balls that have not made it "out of the traps" provided it's quiet and use them for myself if I run low!

I play golf in Portlaoise now and again and you will find the odd "Heritage Range ball" in the rough.... Obviously my county men have nmo issue with "liberating" a few balls.

Saying that - the balls are way better than the common or garden range ball..... Not as abused and better quality

I played a resort course in Greece a few months ago and its range had good quality Srixon balls too. I pinched a couple just to compare to the range balls I use at home. Didn't see much (if any) difference when I got home. I see myself more as a golfing Robinhood than a thief though because I took from a seemingly well-off range to give to a slightly less well-off one.. :o

The quality of range balls has come a long way in the last few years. Used to be those 1-piece solid rubber ones that were useless for control or distance. Driving range balls now are much better for both. I still wouldn't bother pinching them though. As mentioned you can buy better quality lake balls for little or nothing.

    Here's an idea.

Go up to the owner and ask him would he/she mind if you stole a few golf balls.

Say you take 10 - and that 10 other people per week take ten.

That's over 5000 balls from the range every year!

On my local Driving Range you are not permitted to bring your golf bag to the tee.
This is to try and stop ppl filling their bag with the range balls.
Does anywhere else have this policy I wonder?
The place in question is a Pitch a Putt course with a Driving Range.

Question for those of you who take the range balls:
Do they balls have anything written on them?

I thought this was a good idea one night about 15 years ago. I was walking home at about 4.00am :p (after a few beers) and figured I would get a few balls from the range on the way past. It was the middle of January and the temperature was approx -3. I didn't realise there was an open drain around the boundary that had frozen over, and proceeded to step on the ice with the obvious result. :o Water, mud, frozen toes and a lot of choice words for the 10 minutes walk to house.

Lesson: Range balls belong in the range. :D
