Wii - Why the difference in Price??

Anybody any ideas why Argos is charging 250euro and Game/Smyths etc are charging 270euro??

surely once the stocks come back and there is plenty for everyone, people won't buy it for 270, if they know about the difference!

Also, has anybody tried getting the student discount of 5% off a Wii in Gamestop?! that makes it €256.50 which is a good deal for students i think!

any other store do student discounts?

250euro is the rrp set by Nintendo. Stores are allowed charge over that amount if they feel they can without consumer backlash. Because the majority of the stock went to Gamestop/Game and the demand is so high these stores put the price up and people didnt complain with their feet.

Alot of people assume places lke Game/smyths etc are the best place to get the Wii so go there despite better prices elsewhere.

Yep, I wrongly assumed that Smyths would provide the best launch price so put down my preorder there...
Then again, I don't think anywhere else in Galway had them for less than €270 at launch

I dont think Argos had Wii's at launch...I remember someone posting that Argos had bookmarked all it's wii's to its english preorders.

    could be wrong though.

If its true then it explains alot. Because Argos didnt compete at launch it kept its price at the RRP while everyone else cashed in the limited stock and high demand and added a bit on. Since Argos has entered at the RRP it still doesnt have enough stock to force the others to drop their prices.

Got my Wii at Argos and was well happy it was cheaper, used the extra €20 to get another Nunchunk. I got mine just before the new year so was glad Argos had them and were not ripping people off like all the rest in the RIP OFF republic.

Simple. It's because they are *****.

And incase the language filter caught that one, it's a bad word beginning with C.

I heard Argos got some in on launch for €250. I picked up mine from Xtravision at launch for €260.

Is it true that Game give €75 worth of vouchers? And if so what specifically are they?

    Yes and no.

Bought Wii in Game Dawson St on launch day and didn't get any vouchers. Bought Wii three days later in Game on Henry St and got €75 worth of vouchers.

The vouchers were the usual BS €10 off when you spend over €60, etc. and they were all up by the 31st of December so didn't use any as I already had all my games.

Nintendo recommended ( a manufacturer can't set a retail price.. so SMyths & Game didn't 'put the price up') a Europe wide retail price of €250.. without noting that VAT ranged from 5% to 25% in the territory. since the cost price remains the same, retailers set their selling price to accout for local VAT. The average console make 9-11% margin.. so no sane retailer will give away more than they take to suit nintendo. Smyths & Game are thinking in Irish terms.. Argos are thinking in UK terms.. so you get a better price!

Retailers may get different cost prices from the nintendo distributors based on order volumes but the price difference is more likely to be because some retailers think they can get away with a higher price on the justification that they might give out vouchers or because they can sell every console at the given price point without complaint. i.e. there would be a stink if Games sold them at €290 but at €270 people are more likely to say "Ah - its only 20 euror extra".
