Alfonso Cuaron for 'Children of Men'. Just bought it and rewatched it on DVD today (2 days ahead of the UK) and am amazed by it, especially the incredible 9 minute (or so) shot uninterrupted by a camera and the scene in the woods. Should win outright...

Also nominating Paul Greengrass for 'United 93' for really driving home the mind-numbing feeling of terror that crept over everyone on that day.

Alfonso Cuaron - Children of Men
Guillermo del Toro - Pan's Labyrinth

Both deserve it... Guillermo del Toro's vision in 'Pan's Labyrinth' was both horrific and highly captivating and original.

And as for Cuaron, he just impresses me more and more with each film.

    Either of:
Guillermo Del Toro for Pans Labyrinth
    Martin Scorsese for The Departed.

What can I say about Del Toro, the man's a genius. He has a unique talent for film making, borderline auteur.

I like Scorsese but always felt he was weak when it came to directing women, however he proved me wrong with the Departed. Although a remake, he did make it his own.

Del Toro - Pan's Labyrinth - not my favourite film of the year, but one which was improved tenfold by the ability and talent of the director.
Cuaron - Children of Men - initially went with Nolan but Children of Men truly is a beautifully filmed piece of work.

Alfonso Cuaron for Children of Men

    or

Darren Aronofsky for The Fountain, although that hasn't come out in Ireland yet so is presumably not valid (when do nominations close anyway? It opens in a few weeks...).

Secondary nomination is Christopher Nolan for The Prestige.
