Play HD-DVD on HTPC without HDCP support

    As some of you are aware there is a nasty requirement for playback of HD movies if you have a digital display as they demand HDCP support in the display & GPU if you don't then you can play only over analogue connections.

    Well it seems there has been a break through with the HD-DVD tool that I'm sure most of you heard about recently in that it does work as the keys required for playback have now been discovered which was the major stumbling block. I think I have a better understanding of how the tools works in that it doesn't crack AACS but is sort of a dummy player that when fed with the keys for the HD-DVD spits out an unencrypted version.

    Anyway the main point in all this is that HDCP is no longer required for playback on digital displays which means you can use HD-DVD on system without a HDCP display or GPU like mine : )

    I have tested Superman Returns and it took a little while to copy over to the HD but it played back perfectly with PowerDVD 7 Ultra.

    Performance impact was minimal on my Athlon 64 X2 4400+ with GPU acceleration enabled (7800GTX) at about 20-30% usage. Will test on crappy notebook later but VC-1 is easy enough to decode which most HD-DVD's are encoded in.

    However that is not to say it is all roses;
    * To open the .EVO container you must associate it with the HD-DVD player, menus did not work in the only title I was able to test by using this method.
    * Copying to the HD takes time.
    * Those hoping for the ability to make rips will disappointed as there are no tools to demux the video from the HD-DVD .EVO container though this is really only a matter of time.
    * They will change the keys which is also a mattter of time whether this cat & mouse game will keep up is anyone's guess.

    How to do it assuming your using the Xbox 360 drive;
    Step1: Buy the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive or other PC HD-DVD drive & a HD-DVD movie.

    Step2: Plug Xbox 360 drive into PC let it search for memory card drivers it wont find anything.

    Step3: Install HD-DVD file system drivers right click on .inf and select install reboot after (not totally necessary but useful).

    Step4: Purchase PowerDVD 7 Ultra or WinDVD HD 8, if installing PowerDVD Ultra make sure the HD-DVD drive is connected otherwise it will install the Blu-ray version.

    Step5: Download BackupHDDVD 1.00 (as of writing) & extract to a folder.

    Step6: Install latest Java runtime & go to e.g C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ and create a server folder, now copy contents of the client folder into server folder, the reason why is BackupHDDVD would not run for me unless I did this.

    Step7: Go to this Doom9 thread and look over for the title keys now copy & paste into \BackupHDDVD\run\KEYDB.cfg

    Step8: Create a folder for the HD-DVD title in question now open a command prompt and type in e.g "BackupHDDVD f: C:\movie\" where f is the HD-DVD drive letter and C:\movie\ is the target location.

    Step9: Wait : )

    Step10: Associate the .EVO file with PowerDVD now double click on the largest files in the folder which is the movie further experimentation will be required for menus etc.

    That's it no stupid HDCP getting in the way any more.
