    Ok here is the deal. I am very, very bad at computers. Computer illiterate if you like. I have been trying to get updates from my computer for ages now and every time i do it i go throught the whole proces and then it say i must have PROPLUS MSI to continue. I dont know what the hell that is. Am i supposed to have it or what? I have tried to look for answers on google but i cant follow the jargon so i get lost. What i need is someone to help me get the updates in plain and simple english. It would be a great help because i haven't had an update in months. So please, anyone with a bit of knowledge, reply, i would be really grateful.

    Also i haven't been able to even use Excel because of this as well.

    I was similarly confused so ran the winver myself to see the format. He's running XP v5.1 SP2.

    Win2K = WinNT 5.0
    WinXP = WinNT 5.1
    WinVista = WinNT 6.0

    A Google search for proplusmsi would have revealed the solution in short look on the root of your office CD, when it asks for the file browse to the Office CD and it should be there.

    Or try the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder and it should be there too.

    Ok, bear with me here. I've looked for it and i still cant find it. Does anyone know exactly what it looks like and where it should be. This is very annoying.

    Use XP's built in search and look for anything which as the file name proplus or proplus.msi

    Yeh did that. No proplus in the search.

    Should be in c:\program files\microsoft office.

    This link might be of use.

    I dont think i have the original cd that i need. Does this make my search futile or is there a way around it. I got the computer from Dell about 14 months ago.

    Did software come with Dell? The install files are prob on HD if it did. Try the Detect and Repair option.

    XP was already on it when i set up the computer. How do you detect and repair?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    Obviously, but what about Office, did that come with the Dell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭Bodhidharma

    Sorry, yeah it was on it when i set it up.

    Well then check to see if you have the install disks somewhere, or a repair CD. Sometimes the install files for office are kept on the PC's hard drive so if you run the detect and repair function it will pick up the files there.

    To run the Detect and Repair, open any Office app (work, excel ,etc) and click on Help menu on the top toolbar. Detect and Repair is listed below that.

    I tried the detect and repair in word. It said the exact same thing i'm getting all along.

    The feature that you use in on a network resource that is unavailable.

    Click Ok to try again or enter an alterante path to a folder containing the instellation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in the box below.

    Guess you need the CDs so. Contact Dell and ask for a replacement set.

    Cheers man. Appreciate all the effort people put in. I'll give dell a ring tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

    very weird - I had to reinstall office XP on my dad's pc becasue of a similar issue. For some reason, whenever he tried to launch Outlook, it went through some installer process and looked for PRO.msi.

    Had to reinstall MS Office XP to fix. Don't know why it happened.
