Wii - Gamecube games what you need?

A bit annoying I just realised that I can't play gamecube games on the wii.

I picked up Rogue Squadron II today in gamestop for €7. Toddled home and tried it out.

It kept looking for a gamecube memory card unfortunately.

I did a little checking and this post seems to explain it best. It seems you need a gamecube memory card and a gamecube controller to play gamecube games. I thought the classic controller would work but apparently not.

GameCube pads will be the only way to control GameCube games, which can be played as normal with your existing game discs. You must also use GameCube memory cards, and cannot save to Wii's internal memory or SD memory card.

GameCube pads can also be used to play any NES, SNES and N64 titles downloaded from Wii's Virtual Console, although N64 games will not feature rumble capability.

The Wii-mote can be used as a controller for all NES and PC Engine/Turbografx games on Virtual Console. Finally - and obviously - all games on Nintendo's Virtual Console will be playable with Nintendo's Classic controller.

The Wii console is backward compatible with all Nintendo GameCube software and most GameCube peripherals. This backwards compatibility is achieved with the help of the slot-loading drive being able to accept GameCube discs, and a set of four GameCube controller ports and two Memory Card slots, concealed by flip-open panels.[1] A GameCube controller is required to play GameCube games, as neither the Wii Remote nor the Classic Controller functions in this capacity. A GameCube memory card is also necessary if you want to save, as the Wii internal flash memory will not save GameCube games. Nintendo has stated that the console is not compatible with the GameCube modem adapter, broadband adapter, Game Boy Player, AV cable, or AC adaptor.

It's a bit annoying alright, you can't even copy files from the GC memory card to your internal memory/SD card (my second GC memory card is getting full... I needed to clear some space)

In fairness though, they did make this clear enough beforehand

how much is a gc controller and memory card?

Yeah I probably should have checked.. For the sake of €7 though I'll live.

Possibly a way around this which seems a bit insane actually is to buy a gamecube.

I think they are going for around €40 or so in game last time I checked. You would get a controller then and possibly a memory card too. Not sure how sensible that would be. I was kind of looking forward to playing some of the gamecube games.

Not sure how much the controller and card are.

I also was under the impression that the classic controller would be able to play GC games. It seems a bit silly that it doesnt...it has the same amount of buttons yeah? So I bought a classic controller for what turns out to be just to play VC games? Kinda sucks tbh

I picked up this GAMEware controller in Game on Henry St yesterday for €14.95 - working great with Super Mario Sunshine and Pikmin even if it is a little naff looking!

Picked up a generic 64 MB memory card on Ebay for about €13 delivered which is behaving itself too.

You have to buy a GameCube game from a small selection before you get the console at that price. Prices for games I think started at a tenner.
