    Hi guys,

Anyone here ever try this? Think it might be a really interesting career.

Anybody have any idea as to what a "typical" day/week is like (for officers especially) in the NS? For what duration of service does one commit to when joining the cadets and subsequently the main DF?

Join Slua (Naval Service Reserve), go sea for a few weeks, get stuck in and observe the whole thing. Joining cadets and signing a contract for 12 years (3 years for every year in college on a 3 year course in NMCI) after commissioning as an officer is not something to go into on a whim. If you'd like to join navy and enjoy the life for a few years then join as recruit. That way you're freer to leave/stay on. Bear in mind that your views on the life at sea will change when you have a family. If you decide it's for you then go for it. No point regretting not trying something. During your cadetship if you feel you couldn't see yourself doing the same thing in 5/10 years time then leave before commissioning. Once you're commissioned it would be hard to leave. Join the Slua for now anyway. You'd enjoy it since you have an interest and the experience would help you when you go for interviews for cadetship (plus it gives you a few extra percent when they mark you at interview). Get on to the recruitment officer in Navy. They should be able to answer any questions.

Look up the Nautical Science and Marine Engineering courses in the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) as you'll be spending three years there doing one or other if you do a cadetship.

The Naval Service Reserve are unfortunately not recruiting at present, possibly not until 2011.
