You cannot get a International Driving Permit with a provisional licence.

"An International Driving Permit (IDP) is available to Irish Residents, with a current full Irish Driving Licence. Each Licence is valid for one year from date of issue."

"Permits cannot be issued to holders of provisional licences or non EU/EEA licence holders."

Plus and IDP is really just a translation of the details on your Irish driving licence - it's not a standalone proof of identity/driving licence. It's pretty much useless in the US.

A provisional licence isn't valid anywhere outside the Republic, it should say so on the cover someplace. If you do manage to rent a car with it when you go abroad it's the same as driving without a licence, so you wont have insurance cover or anything like that. And even if you did manage to get a full licence, most american insurance policies require that you have at least 1 years driving experience at home before you can rent/drive somebody elses car.

    Generally speaking, no.

But my first time in New Mexico, I was working there for six months and had a company car. Because of that, I had to get a New Mexico licence. I went into the DMV (dept. of motor vehicles), handed in my Irish provisional and got a brand spanking new New Mexico one, no test, nothing.

Still, I doubt it highly that you would be able to get a car on an Irish provisional.

One hell of a bump here but whatever....

So i'm gonna be in the states next year with a friend, and was looking to do travelling as well. He's got his full license, but i wont have my full one by the time we're looking at going. I'm assuming that i still can't drive with my provisional, even though there'll be a fully licensed driver in the car with me? Just need to know now if we should push the holiday back a bit and wait for my 6 months to be up, or go with it earlier.

Nothing's changed. Most (if not EVERY) car hire firm will have it in their T&Cs that every driver must hold a full licence/permit.

Thought as much. Thanks for the info. Guess we'll be waiting a little while longer to do it then.

When are your 6 months up? You can hire the car if he has a full license, you just can't drive it. Doesn't stop you from having the holiday surely?
