    Hi there,

I have a problem with my laptop and was hoping that someone could help? For some reason, the cd/dvd rom drive is not coming up on my computer. When I put in a dvd or cd I can hear the disk running for a couple of seconds but it won't launch. Has anyone any ideas of what to do? Thanks for reading.

Is it showing under Disk Management? (Start->Run->compmgmt.msc in the box and then scroll down to Disk Management). Have a disc in there when trying.

    Ruu, thanks for reply.

I don't think its showing the dvd rom, I got the following.

    Status : healthy (unknown partition)
    Free space: 100% (4Gb).

    I've attached the result:

    Disk Management.JPG

I got the same thing with a disk in and out.

That's strange alright, seems your DVD drive has gone AWOL. Could be that the drive has died. Try the usual suspects like running add hardware wizzard and since it's a laptop can you remove the DVD drive and put it back in?

Does the drive show under device manager at all? Right click My Computer and select Properties then Device Manager is on the Hardware tab. If it isn't there then there's a serious problem.

has it been assigned a Drive letter? doesnt look like it from that screenshot.

also, Device Manager, Secondary IDE controller -> make sure DMA is enabled.

    Thanks folks,

So, I ran add hardware wizard, removed and connected the DVD rom and checked device manager but didn't get any joy.

It can't find the hardware device but it has the driver:

    -device status-

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

To the question about assigning a letter. It used to be assigned 'D' but I don't think thats what your asking?. I made sure DMA was enabled and it was.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated, looks as though I need a new drive then?
