Hi.. I just recently set up a wireless internet connection with Eircom and had some trouble setting it up. I got on to Eircom and they fixed the problem by getting me to turn the encryption level off. They changed it from 128 bit to nothing.. The customer support guy said it must be my wireless card not being able to support 128 bit encryption which he personally thought was strange. Is this something that others have found a problem and what implications will this have for my security settings?

What hardware are you using to connect to the the router?

Encryption off means anyone can connect to your router and use your internet.

And if they wanted to could sniff you trafic, see what web pages you are going to,what you are saying over instant messaging ect.

128bit wep on would mean it would take 10 mins - 1 hr to break into your network but most people wouldn't know how or couldn't be bothered :)

Ya, we need to know what kind of Mac you own and which operating system you have on it. Your network must be secured with WPA. I can't believe that muppet at eircom told you to turn it off. If it turns out your system is too old then I recommend going with a wired solution. If I was outside your house or living next door, my laptop would see that your network was open. I would be on it in a flesh and be downloading like mad.

Also, Apple don't use there own encryption. It's standard ( the same as on a PC) as is the wireless hardware the Mac uses.

There is a good podcast called "Security Now" http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm
Have a listen to episode 11 and 13. It will explain WEP and WPA and tell you the right way to secure your network.

    Hi all..

I am using OS X 10.4.8 and am connection to a Netopia Wireless modem just through the standard airport extreme that came with the computer.

I have gone into the netopia settings and tried to set the WEP Automatic encryption to 64 bit but as soon as I do this the connection stops and becomes disabled. It still says I am connected to the wireless network but it doesn't seem like it.

Have you entered the same WEP key on your mac?
