    Hi All,

I’m looking to buy a home cinema system. I’m not looking to go into great expense on this as sound and picture quality would not be that important. Taking into account DVDs/Cassettes either recorded from television or from friends that may not have the best picture or sound quality, can anyone recommend a (cheaper) home cinema system that would meet this criteria. Reasons why you recommend each model and good websites to buy them will also be welcome.

Budgetwise, I'd say €1,000 to €1,500 for projector, speakers and screen.

    Thanks in Advance

One word: eBay. The trick is to buy stuff that got a really good rating two years back (homecinemachoice.com is good, as is projectorcentral.com). For example I have a brilliant Infocus 4805 projector that I got from eBay for €385 with only 100 hours on the bulb, and an awesome Denon AVR-1705 amp that I got for €150. I also have a Denon AVR-1602 amp which I got for €120 or something.

The projector will accept signals up to 1080i (ok, native resolution is 480p so it won't look *as* amazing as the current ones but it still looks amazing and didn't cost me €2K) so its future-proofed and the amp does component video switching. No complaints here!

In general I would advise you to go with Infocus for projectors and Denon for Amps as they are both in the cheaper-than-other-brands-but-still-top-quality bracket if you are on a budget. Buy a good quality center speaker since that's where all the dialogue comes out and upgrade the others as and when you have the money. I'd recommend anything by Mission. My M7C1 is brilliant.

As far as the screen goes simply sand the wall down, paint it white, and put a black border around it. Ok, videophiles will wince and it won't be as good as a real screen but it works well and you can replace it as and when you have the cash. You're on a budget, right? You can get projector-screen paint if you want to be *really* enthusiastic. Search google for DIY projector screens and see what you find.

Oh, and use ebay.co.uk. The search on ebay.ie is worse as it won't show you sellers that have "will post to UK only" in their preferences even though 9 times out of 10 they will post to Ireland if you ask them.
