Ram question

A while back I built up my new pc. I got two sets of Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR-DIMM 2048MB which is a kit w/two matched CMX1024-3200C2 DIMMs (https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=302138 ). I knew XP wouldn't really push all 4gigs but I though, what the hell. I know have another PC built up which will take PC3200 ram that I want to put a gig ram into. My question is, will taking a gig away from the 4gig set effect the way it works, as in, will splitting up one of the matched pairs effect the way the other 3 work together?

It is a possibility if you are only removing one DIMM, check the motherboard manual to see if it will still operate in dual channel mode with 3 DIMM's present.

I checked up in the manual and its says that it wont work in dual channel mode with three stickss or ram there. But Im not sure weather it will run the 2 in dual channel and ignore the othe stick or what? If I took one out would it only run 2Gs or would it run the 3Gs?

The capacity will remain the same in other words you will still have 3GB of RAM just that performance will be noticeably reduced as the memory controller will no longer be operating in dual channel mode which requires pairs of modules to work.

I think the best thing to do is remove two 1GB modules so both machines will have 2GB each without any performance penalty.

Anyway 2GB is considered the sweet spot in XP for power users so unless your are running specialist software which requires large amounts of RAM you really wont be losing anything.
