There's been nothing of interest on the advertiser lately so i need advice on where to look and where to apply to cos i dont really know th city at all!

Im looking for something in advertising or marketing to be honest if i cant get that anything will do me at this stage. I just need out of here!!!!

We're always short staffed here in Atlantic Homecare....

Great student job! As for an actual job, eh...hmmm.

Depressing as it may sound, it may work out for you better long term to stay where you are until July (unless something fantastic comes up), as it will look better on your CV to have given a job a year + instead of what will look on paper like a couple of months.

What kind of work are you looking for, and what is your qualification?

There are stacks of small advertising, marketing and design businesses after opening in the last few years. If you can't find them you're not looking very hard. Give some more info on your qualifications and what you want to be doing and I'll point you in the right direction.

I'm a student so I work about 22 hours a week, pay is 9.31 an hour. It's a fairly decent job. Managers are great, which is one of the most important things in my opinion.

Bachelor of Business Degree specialising in Marketing

working as sales and marketing exec here since july but actually control the whole funtion of the business, before that helped sister set up her own business did the promotional n marketing efforts for that......very strong customer service background etc

Basically i have planned all my parttime jobs all my study to get a career in marketing , ideally i would like to work in advertising, alternatively i would like the experience of working in a marketing team for a company.

My ultimate aim is to lecture (in 20 yrs) and until i then i want to gain as much experience as i can.

I know it wont look great to have only 6/7 months on my CV but i need out so bad. I work on my own every day, boss drops a fone call the odd time, im runnin the whole show for ****e money and i have no motivation left for this job anymore n if the damn thing fails well that'l be on my head.

i think im just better off out of this job

Have you tried any of the recruitment companies?

Try Caroline Phillips in Eyre Square, ICE on Fr Griffin Rd, Marlborough on New Dock St, etc.

    * Find out what companies in Galway are in your line of business. Ask around, check the phone book, google etc etc
    * Ring them and get the HR name and mail.
    * Mail your CV, say you heard of the company and would be interested in joining them. If you hear nothing, ring after ten days to enquire.
    * Think of a good reason why you want to leave your current job. Do not complain about your old boss - the new boss will not like that.

Even though they are not advertising doesn't mean they won't hire someone who seems eager and ambitious! Also they will maybe remember you if something comes up.

Every company has a hook (a unique thing). If you find that you can use that to stand out. "So, I hear that your company does educational promotions. As it happens that's what I do best/have specific knowledge about"...

    Work for yourself FTW

It rocks, you work when you want, you sit on yer arse when ya want, it's handy because of college

@Plonk - Atlantic are pretty short staffed at the moment. I've don't know if they've taken in CV's and/or already called people regarding jobs, but we've had only one new staff members in the last few weeks, but need more. Wouldn't hurt to drop in a CV...

When I applied there first, I got a job straight away, as did my friend - this was in mid September when every other student was whining about the lack of jobs available. :)

not being funny but if you really REALLY wanted a job you would have followed up that cv with ICE after 2 days not 2 weeks and contacted all the other agencies! Its just common sense really....

Get on the jobs websites, contact recruiters, put your CV on Monster.

Don't expect something to fall into your lap, which you appear to be doing by posting here. It's the online equivalent of walking around Eyre Square asking random people if they know where you could pick up a Marketing career. Why not just stand down the Spanish Arch with a "Will Market for Food" sign?

Do you want a career in marketing or do you want to live in Galway? You may not be able to have both.

If you're too lazy to hand out CV's you can be my monkey. I'll pay you in peanuts and discount tiles from Daft Dave's collection.

Don't know if you'd last long though, you sound kinda useless (I mean that in the nicest way possible) :D

Btw, I need something to do between 8 and 10 in the mornings if someone needs help in shop, load/unload sh*t or similar. Can't go longer than 10 tho.

I always find it strange how people expect a excellant career job to pop up and bite them on the ass! Just doesnt happen.

Those people we all know from college that found the perfect position didnt do so by waiting for something in the Galway advertiser. What ya gotta do:

Step 1: make sure your CV reflects your abilities perfectly. Plus tailor your CV as you apply to different industries, positions etc

In marketing, I presume the ability to sell yourself in the first place is pretty important. If your CV doesnt at least match the best looking CV thats ever come in the door then why bother hiring you?

Step 2: Get your hands on lists of business. Golden Pages, Red Book, Employer indexes on IrishJobs.ie, Recruit Ireland.ie etc, lists of companies that have attend the various employment fairs recently, lists of companies in the galway area from ida-west.ie etc etc

Basically build up a list of every possible suitable employer in the galway area.

Step 3: Then pick out those companies you think would be cool to work for, Tailor your CV appropriately and send your CV to the MARKETING manager (if IT the IT manager etc et) Not to HR.
(99times/100 if you send CV to HR just gets tossed onto the stack and the above is a waste of time)

Follow up with phone call TO THE MARKETING MANAGER the following day "to make sure they received the cv" and introduce yourself.

Remember: they might tell you feck off, or not employing at the moment or HR deals with all applications.

If you dont stick your neck out you wont "eventually" find something. In marketing I presume you need to get used to this anyways.

Thank them and tell them that if any positions become available you would be grateful if they remembered you...................etc etc etc SELL YOURSELF!!!

If you're good they will. They might even tell you of a friend who is looking for someone, or a company they know employing at the moment.

    The above is called networking.

Note all the above in a diary

Step 4: Call companies with the most potential again 2-3-4 weeks later.

Step 5: Keep an eye on the Galway advertiser for interesting positions that have made it past the guys doing all of the above.

just in response to that last comment I am not stupid i have a very good CV i am great in interviews and I know the ins and outs of the process of getting a job!!!!!

My point was that I am NEW to the CIty I still dont know it well at all and to be honest I dont know what large companies operate here I was really looking for some recommendations on where to look, or what large companies operate here etc.....

I do not expect a job to come up and "bite me in the ass" as you so pleasanlty put it I am more than willing to do the leg work.

The post before this one gave you a ton of practical advice on where to find lists of companies in Galway.

No offence but you do sound lazy, and your little histrionic fit when called on it was quite telling, I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to hire any Marketing grads whose unsolicited CV's landed in my door in the near future, just in case it was you.

No I am not lazy and i wouldnt be too concerned about getting my CV as Im not staying in Galway.

ANd to be honest if a person comes on here seeking a bit of information about the city the last thing anyone would expect is to get condescending, patronising comments back!!

I just said you sound lazy, your posts came across that way. You may be the most proactive energetic person in the world, but you didn't come accross that way. You asked for a list of companies. You were given the tools to construct that list yourself, namely

    1. Golden Pages
    2. IDA West
    3. Recent Recruitment Fairs
    4. Employer lists on jobs websites

You think that's patronising and condescending? Did you expect a full list to be drawn up for you? It seems like you did: hence you come across as lazy. In the end of the day you're the one on here asking for help, which I think you got in spades by the way (see list above), it's no skin off anyones nose if you get a job or not, maybe you could respond positively to the actual help you did receive.

It's probably a wise career move to go to Dublin or another big city, far more jobs in your area there.

An angry young man, aren't you?

I dont work in marketing but I presume personality has a big part to play in success?

I honestly didnt mean fail in providing you with a list of perfect career options and contact details in the Galway area paying good money, apologies.

I regret taking the time to even lay out for you what I wish someone had laid out for me when I left college. Instead of wasting time sending my CV into the abyss called the internet and patiently waiting for replys.! Not wanting to "annoy" managers with regular phone-calls!! Maybe you need a few more years of frustration to wise up though.

As said above, unless an actively hiring marketing manager happens to read this thread, you're in trouble.

As for not knowing companies. 99% of companies have a website. Any of the above lists will give it to you or google once you get the lists organised.

If you're looking for marketing Jobs I presume only medium-large organisations can afford marketing departments. <<<Or actual marketing firms. >>>

    In fact I presume all marketing functions are centralised ie only large Galway-owned/with Galway based-HQ ;
companies will be hiring marketers so narrow your search like that.
Use your head and get active.

    I dont even do marketing!!

I dont know what else you're looking to hear.

Galway is positively festering with marketing people nowadays, I mean how many more of them do we really need :(

If you are solely running the business, isn't there an opportunity in the future to be manager of this business. I doubt you are the great worker you say you are. People's attitude to other people speaks volumes about their potential and capabilities. You're attack on another poster who took his time to provide you with some good advice suggests that you are prone to rashness, irritability, poor team player and are in general a green novice who lacks undertanding of other peoples views. It just might be that your boss thinks he is giving you the opportunity of a lifetime running the business, sounds like you want the easy option out.
