Input volume very low in GarageBand

    I've contected M-Audio Fast Track box via usb to my mac and started using it in GB. I have changed input device to Fast Track in applications/utlities/Audio MIDI Setup.

    I've set the Input device in preferences in GB to Fast Track.

    When i connect the guitar through direct imput in the FT box everything is working fine in GB but when i try to record through the mic input on the Fast Track the recording volume is way too low. (way, way too low! it nearly defeats the whole purpose of having a mic input)

    Does anyone know what is going wrong here. I've tried turning the input up in the mic to 10 max input (there was no 11) but this gives a lot off background interference and buzz.

    This is really frustrating as i have tried to isolate all the different elements involved but to no avail... it's driving me CRAZY!

    Spec;
    OS X.4.8
    2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    1.6Gb RAM

    GarageBand 3

    M-Audio Fast Track
    YOGA D727 - Unidirectional mic 400 ohms

    I take it you have the 'switchable instrument/line input (1/4”)' at the correct position so is there some kind of software that came with it? I have the M-Audio firewire control panel application for my Firewire 410 where you can adjust input levels etc. Or how about the 'Sound' preferences in System preferences. Choose 'input'. Your Fast track should appear in the list with 'Internal mic' and 'Line in' and you can adjust the 'input volume' fader there. Are the input faders up in the 'audio midi' utility? If you are using one of those jack input/XLR output adaptors is the wiring correct on your jack plug lead going into it?

    Thanks for the response.

    Ok...

    Cables have been disconnected checked reconnected.
    I've tried restart and disconnection/reconnection.
    Sound prefs in system preferences are setup correctly.
    audio midi utility setup.

    The only things there is i haven't tried tinkering with the software with it. I'm generally sceptical of bundled packages (particularly when no mac versions are supplied with) but will give it a go.

    As for the Firewire 410. That seems like a superior model than what i'm using. Looking at the M-Audio website, there is (what seems) a more powerful preamps in the Firewall 410. i wonder if this is why my dynamic mic just can't pick things up... a low power pre-amp?
    is that a fair assumption?

    Is it "global phantom power". i notice that the Firewire 410 has this.

    the spec for mic input is;

    Microphone Input
    max input -2.2dBu (0.6 Vrms), min. gain
    signal to noise ratio -100dB @ 48kHz (A-weighted), min. gain
    dynamic range 100dB @ 48kHz (A-weighted), min. gain
    THD + N 0.0053%, 1kHz, -1dBFS @ 48kHz, min. gain
    frequency response +0.08 / -0.12dB, 22Hz to 22kHz @ 48kHz, min. gain
    available gain 45dB
    input impedance 1M Ohms
