Tommy Tiernan - Jokerman DVD

Since there is no section for DVDs, I'm posting my review here for discussion.

I only saw two of the episodes from the series Jokerman that aired on RTE. I loved it; the content, documentary style and photography were all top notch.

What I'm extremely pissed about is this DVD by RTE, it's roughly a 70 minute edited feature of the whole four episodes (Although, episode 4 was a semi collection of the series). The extras on the DVD are great but the main feature is quite a let down.

This is a new edit of the entire series with slightly extended scenes (Some of the stand-up is maybe half a minute more in parts) from the original broadcast but a lot is left out; also, the music is different in parts. To extend my rant, there is only a few seconds from Letterman, although I'm guessing Letterman is picky about the rights to put his show on DVD; either that or RTE are cheap bastards. When one buys a DVD of a television series, the least they expect to get are all the episodes, not half the show cut! It was an excellent documentary with very funny stand-up material, it's just a shame you had some idiot of a producer with the final say to cut half the show. Should I be that surprised to see this from a DVD released by RTE, I've never come across this with the BBCs and the HBOs of this world.

It's still worth buying. The 25 minute New York gig is excellent as a bonus feature, along with the Late Late clips but the main feature being butchered brings the score (The content 5/5) for the DVD down to 3/5.

Tommy Tiernan on rte would be sensored to death. It wouldn't show fans the real Tommy and what he is capable of as a showman. But I would definately buy the Dvd's and 'Jokerman', if you haven't heard any of his material (where the hell have you been :o) and watch it over and over cause he is funnier each time you watch his Dvd's. :D

It's all down to money. RTE have blanket rights on music for broadcast - so an editor can stick any song over a program - however if they're releasing it on DVD they have to negotiate the music rights so if they've used popular songs then getting the rights for them could prove too expensive. If they spend too much money on music and clips from other shows then they don't make any money off the DVD.

Also Jokerman was made by Power Pictures for RTE so I think you'll find that the decision was probably made by them out of neccessity rather than by 'some idiot of a producer in RTE'. I've worked with the producer of Jokerman before and he's far from an idiot.

The reason you haven't come across this with BBC or HBO is because they have more money and can afford to buy the full rights for the music they use

i thought the Letterman scene was annoying anyway with that audience laughing at every movement. so forced and so typical of the american audience at those chat shows

    Jeff_Lebowski:

Point taken about the producer, I take it back.

I can understand the music being changed due to rights for the release of a DVD. Charging 20 Euro, cutting a lot out for a DVD is bad form and still makes it a poorer edited feature than what was aired.
