Ethernet, Bothernet!

    Hi,

I've got a standard ZyXel modem and can use the internet easily when I use its USB connection into my Dell laptop. But when I try to use the ethernet cable instead, I don't get any response or internet connection.

I have a wireless router which I want to set up but I don't expect that to be able to work with the ethernet until I can get something working with it (all I can get right now is the power light, a flashing red light under "wireless" and no light under "ethernet").

The only problem I can think of is maybe a faulty ethernet cable but is there anything else I can do before buying a replacement? It's only a new cable so I don't really expect it to be broken straight out of the box.

If anyone can help me with this, that'd be very great! :D

Well try another cable (they're cheap enough).

Are you sure that the ethernet card on your PC is working/enabled? Any lights on it when you plug in a cable (Most ports have lil LED's to show activity, etc). Have you connected PC to any other modem/router? Could be worth while bringing it round to mate's house or something.

I actually have 2 that I've tried now so don't think it's the cable itself. There are no LEDs beside my laptop's ethernet port.. is there any other ways to make sure it's on?

Not connecting on the other laptop either..

Yep, some old Dell laptops are like that. Ethernet port but no ethernet card installed. But every new laptop (<3 years) would have one.
