A friend just phoned me there to say he got one and was wondering what the story is .

I figured someone on boards might have come accross one before . It's Irish 2004 .

This looks to me like an electroplating error. I am not entirely sure, but the 1 cent, 2 cent and 5 cent coins are bronze coated steel alloy.

Bring it to a coin dealer, errors do command a premium, but it would be better to hold on to it for the next 5-10 years, since I reckon Irish 1 and 2 cent coins won't be in circulation much longer. They are going the same way as the old decimal 1/2 penny coin in the early 1980's. Hated, despised and useless.

Its when they are gone that they go up in value. 10 Fold or more.

Might be a manufacturing error; it could also easily be a standard coin someone electroplated in a school experiment etc (I "made" a couple such coins myself back when I did chemistry). Is any copper colour coming through at the edges?

Had a good look at it last night and there was no evidence of copper on the edges .

I found one of these today. I know this topic is years old but did you get any result? Anyone actually know what they are worth?

Money errors in the US are worth quite a bit. Money folded over itself and printed etc..

Might be worth going to a pawn shop?

I've seen them going for around 20 Euro. No point bringing it to a pawn shop! You'd want to be selling it to a coin collector or dealer.

You can take the copper off the 1, 2 and 5c coins by throwing them into concentrated nitric acid!

Yes, but that can be spotted as the images on the coin become weak looking after removing the copper and not as sharp as if the coin was struck straight onto a steel planchet which never got it's copper coating in the first place. But you raise an important point that people should be aware of!

    Fair point.

It's grand. But thank you! Probably something that people should watch out for alright, because it's quite easy to do! :)
