In fact the 1.3 Diesel engine in the Astra is actually a Fiat engine afaik, so it may well be used in other brands also.

Very few small diesels available for 3000 euro. The main one I can think of is the old 1.4 litre diesel in the Peugeot 106 and Citroen AX. You'd be talking about a pretty old car and it should cost a lot less than 3000.

at those sort prices you'd be getting a pretty clapped out car where maintenance costs will eat in to fuel savings
Might be better going for a reliable japanese car with a small engine like a Starlet, Corrola, Micra, Almera, Colt or Lancer, etc.....
You'll get near diesel economy with fewer unexpected bills

Do you mind telling us why you will only go to 1.5 deisel and not maybe 1.9?

there are way more 1.9 out there and very economical.
    I get 100mls for a tenner in my 306 1.9.

    cheaper insurance

I changed from a '90 998cc starlet last september to a 1.9d 306 because the insurance was cheaper ~300€, and i am far from the most qualified driver.

from what i gather from entering several carsinto the quinn web page i can get and petrol up to 1.4 and any deisel up to 1.9 and some 2.4D with quin direct for the same price as a 1L starlet as long as the car is quoted as being worth 2500€ +. if i said the car was worth less the primium went up by ~500€ , madness i no.

Also if you go online and mess about withe the Quin web page you will find that some cars might have lower insurance with a higher spec, eg daewoo lanos 1.6 i was getting quoted the same as a '90 1L

    Yearly Motor Tax 1.4 - €358.00. 1.5 - €384, and a 1.9 - €626.00.....

the 1.4 hdi diesel engine is out since 2001 in the peugeot 206/307 so you will easily pick up some half decent one of them for €3000. when did ford bring out the 1.4hdi diesel in the fiesta- was it 2003? you should be able to pick one of these up aswell.
