One dead as RAF helicopters collide
    January 10, 2007 17:00

Two RAF training helicopters have collided in mid-air in northwestern England killing one person and injuring three.

The Squirrel aircraft, which normally carry two people each, came down at Tern Hill, near the town of Shrewsbury in the county of Shropshire.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: 'We can confirm that two Squirrel helicopters from RAF Shawbury collided at the relief landing ground at Tern Hill. Rescue services are on the site.'

He declined to say how many people were on board the helicopters or the extent of injuries.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service told AFP news agency the crash happened at 2.51pm this afternoon.

He added: 'We understand that there were two people in each helicopter. The four injured are believed to be males.

'One was very seriously injured. Another, who is in his 30s, has fractures to his jaw and a head injury. He was flown semi-conscious to the University Hospital of north Staffordshire.

'Of the two others, one has minor lacerations and one is believed to be non-injury.'

Sweet. Kudo's to the pilots for landing alive. Pity one died, but from the amount of totals that have happened, I'm glad that people survived.
